I’m back readers from my girly weekend in New York City and the results are in. Drinking and eating too much on very little sleep makes me look like crap. I am in serious need of detox. SERIOUS. I haven’t had that much to drink since maybe college. It was ugly. I never made it to the spa if you’re wondering. I did happen to catch the Cai Guo Qiang Exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum and it was fantastic. Please check it out if you have the opportunity. I digress. So right now my skin looks pretty dull and dry. My face is puffy…basically I look fugly and it’s all my own doing. Why is it that I am my own worst enemy?

One of my favorite places to visit in NYC is Kiehl’s. They are as committed as they can be I guess to the environment (I won’t poo poo their efforts) and do not test on animals. I was unable to visit this time because I was too busy eating and drinking my way through the city. I did however order online today a couple of items I feel I am in desperate need of. The Soothing Gel Masque was at the top of my list. I need moisture and rejuvenation, well and the good sense to not act like I’m 21. Also my eyes have lovely dark circles so I also picked up the Imperiale Repairateur Moisurizing Eye Balm. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate my 30th birthday. Goodbye foolishness and folly of my 20’s. Goodbye Grey Goose. Okay well not goodbye but it will be a long time before we “speak” again.

I’m back with another lip balm rave. What again? Yes, again. If there is anything you need to know about me is that I am all about the lip balm and hand lotion. Seriously, it borders on the obsessive compulsive. I literally go nowhere without these two items. The feeling of dry lips or hands is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. It’s enough to rouse me out of a sound sleep at least once a night. My husband once told me that he knew he was in love with me when I had left my lip balm and lotion next to his bed. It was like a part of me left behind. Umm, I mean on the porch, I left them next to the porch swing. We would hold hands and read poetry. Yeah, that’s exactly how it happened.

My devotion to Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1 is fanatical. If I were stranded on a dessert island and I could only have two lip balms, this would be one of them. Of course I would be stashing a third in my shoe. There’s no way I could survive with just two. At this moment my purse holds five. It is luxurious, silky and smooth. The last thing I do at night is apply lotion to my hands and feet and a coat of this. It is just so moisturizing and “dare I say succulent”. For the total experience, brush your lips with a toothbrush to exfoliate then apply lip balm #1. Let it soak in for about 20 minutes, then apply lipstick as usual. It just smooths everything out and make your lips look plump and moist. Or most days I just put this on and some mascara. It just picks up the natural pigment in your lips in the most flattering way. I also have the slightly tinted lip balm that is great for a little more color. Still not lipstick or overdone. They are not tested on animals and have mostly natural ingredients. That’s pretty much all I can say for this product’s “green” pedigree. Not terrible but not purely organic, non-synthetic either. Everyone has a little gray area where their personal standards become murky. This is mine. Lip balm #1, you complete me.

Hi Kim,

I’d love to see some info on good, simple, basic skin care (besides the “drink lots of water/use sunscreen” thing, which I already do). I’m in my mid-30’s and my skin has changed drastically in the last few years, as will happen. My tried and true products don’t work the same as they used to … and given that the consultants at the beauty counters have their own products to push, how can I be certain that what they recommend is really the best choice for me? What’s really necessary and what can someone on a budget do without? And of all the “natural” skin care lines out there, which are really worth looking into?

Larissa.

Hi Larissa and thank you so much for stopping by!

I can only tell you what has worked for me, although I don’t know what you are using now and what your skin type is so I will be as thorough as possible here.

First, I use Kiehl’s Supremely Gentle Eye Makeup Remover. This is not good for waterproof makeup and at the same time I will say I am not a fan of waterproof mascara, although I am a huge fan of the MAC and Bobbi waterproof eye liner gels, so I think it would work okay with those. This eye makeup remover keeps the eye area soft and yet the remover is not greasy or oily and does not give little white bumpies.

I really do like the Kiehl’s line of eye creams, particularly the Cryste Marine (promoting firmness and discouraging dark circles) and the Imperial Reperateur Eye Balm which is for a more mature skin (read: a little greasy) but is good for night time.
Other skin care can be a little tricky: it all depends on what your skin is like. I will tell you what brands I love and you can write back and tell me what kind of skin type you have and we can hash it out a little bit more finely:

I have never used a better cleanser than the Astara Gelee Cleanser.

I love this product. It’s gentle yet thorough and it leaves my skin feeling perfect. If you have dry skin, you might want to try the Alba Creamy Cleanser. I keep wanting to love Alba but I find that it makes me break out a little and I think it’s because my skin is super-combo and I think you need to be on the drier side.

Right now I am using the Korres Rose Moisturizer and I really like it. Korres appeals to me because it is homeopathic, has no mineral oils, no parabens and no sodium laureth sulfates yet their products feel normal and not like they are missing anything. Other brands to try are Ole Henrikson, which is affordable and fairly natural and really hot right now and Dr. Haushka, which I absolutely adore. I love their lip balm which is the only thing that will work in winter months.

Sanoflore is also a very organic, natural, vital line with a high percentage of organic ingredients and they use orange water instead of regular water so the products are really activated.

I was going to recommend one particular cream, but thankfully I can’t seem to find it: it had amazing ingredients but the head shot of the doctor whose brand it is was so scary, that I just as soon not encourage people to use his products. Honestly, I don’t understand what passes for good looking these days.

In any case, I hope that gives you something to chew on, please let me know if you have any other questions.

Best,

Kim
