Chic News: Obama Lets Tougher Emissions Standards Go Through

Ah, thanks President Obama.

You did a 180 on Bush’s previous disapproval of states setting harsher emissions requirements. Now, 14 states are able to crack down on emissions.

California’s waiver would have required carmakers to slash vehicle emissions by almost a third by 2016 (increasing the fuel efficiency of the car and light truck fleet to 36 mpg), 4 years ahead of the federal deadline; it was meant to take effect in the 2009 model year.

LCF to Open ‘Centre for Sustainable Fashion’

The London College of Fashion is currently working on an exciting new project: a ‘Centre for Sustainable Fashion’!

The Centres’ goal is to push sustainable fashion forward. It hopes to provide a forum for experts in sustainable practices and existing partnerships for collaboration and new, innovative ideas.

They are still in the process of securing funding and the school is expected to open in April 2008.

“London College of Fashion is committed to drive up the quality of advice, information and support surrounding issues of sustainability and climate change,” said Dr Frances Corner, Head of London College of Fashion.

“Environmental and ethical concerns should be high on everyone’s agenda, as fundamental considerations for any forward thinking fashion organization.”

The London College of Fashion is already putting their greenest foot forward.

They recently held their “Is Green the New Black” campaign, which was a week of festivities dedicated to promoting sustainability and eco-awareness in the fashion industry.

Jones New York Launches Eco-Friendly Line

Jones New York is jumping on the hybrid bandwagon with a green-friendly new line. Called “J”, it’s a spring line that is “casual and eco-influenced”.

“With Jones at 35, it’s always important to continue to evolve the brand,” said Lynne Cote, chief executive officer of wholesale for sportswear, suits and dresses at Jones Apparel Group Inc. “It’s a more relaxed way of dressing, different from the more tailored clothing Jones is known for.”

J will have three different eco-lines. “Pure” will be 100% organic, “Smart” will use organic and non-organic fabrics like lycra and “Simple” will not be organic, but it is promised that “it fits into the line’s premise through the casual chic style.”

“It really is about fashion first,” Cote said. “She’s not willing to give up the look to go green, and we don’t believe fashion has evolved so much that we can be 100 percent green with everything, so we are focusing on the fabrics.”

The collection will also divide its pieces into three distinct categories: “Essentials”, which will consist of travel-friendly staples; “Spa Wear” which will have more detail and colors; and “Classification Category”, which will have the most variety in terms of garments, fabrics, and details.

The prices will be fairly reasonable too, with a basic tank going for around $10.00 and jackets being about $75.00.

They are hoping to launch this line this spring at retailers like Dillard’s and Macy’s.

“We know we are here to stay, and we are not putting a ‘for sale’ sign out,” Cote said. “We wouldn’t be investing in this brand like we are if we weren’t confident.”
