Pretty by Nature

That Burning Feeling

This is the oft-mentioned “hubby” posting. My wife has generously allowed me to de-rail her narrative to blather on about something that concerns me.

Please address all death threats to Mrs. Pretty By Nature.

In any case, as a person with rosacea, I find myself unduly affected by icy, winter winds. About 5 minutes in a -2 degree wind chill, and my face looks like it’s glowing. As such, I was excessively interested by the blurb in February’s Esquire magazine on windburn.

It made me think of all the things I have to do to combat the wind in this kind of climate, while avoiding all the frilly, girly items that are piled about the house (and seem to be piling up more, since the wife has decided that it is her duty to test products for you, her loyal readers).

Believe it or not, my number one weapon is non-petroleum jelly. It’s an old trick, but smearing the stuff across the cheeks is a great armor against the damage a winter wind brings. I know what you’re saying. “Hey, you may not read your wife’s blog, but we’re all about organic goods, here!”

Well, cool your jets, Mr. or Ms. Hypothetical. The important part was the non in the non-petroleum jelly. The folks at Care2 have a recipe, here. It’s basically olive oil, beeswax and grapeseed extract.

With this stuff smeared on my face, and the steps for repair in my hip pocket, I can journey forth into the world, confident in the knowledge that I’ll just have to worry about the wallet, keys and extra layer of winter wear I’ve forgotten behind me.
