Here’s my idea for a first date outfit that would be perfect for coffee, lunch, or a casual dinner.

Straight Leg Jeans
Good Society – $109

I love these straight leg jeans in gray. They are made with organic cotton and just a touch of lycra. They are handmade, fairly traded and a portion of the profits made from their sale goes to charity. That just might make them good-karma first date denims.

Disco Top
SUST – $76

This slate-colored, short-sleeved tunic is a cute and comfy choice. You can wear it on or off the shoulders. It’s also available in a cherry red (men love red) or a soft buttery yellow. I picked the slate, because I’m going for subtle and classic.

Summer Scarf
SUST – $24

This scarf would give me something to do with my hands, which could be a lifesaver when dealing with first date jitters. When sitting down, I could hold onto the ends and stop myself from gesturing madly, which is what I’m prone to do when nervous. The scarf is made from a soft, organic, supima cotton.

If you are brave enough to try the Jumpsuit trend this time around, then here are a few simple tips to keep you from looking like a throw-back to the 80s.

*Choose a jumpsuit that is tailored in a drapey, but still close to your body fit. You do not want to look like a farmer in overalls or an airplane mechanic. There’s nothing wrong with either of those jobs, they just are not known for their fashion sense. You want to be known for your fashion sense.

*Choose a jumpsuit with an open neckine, shoulder straps, or some sort of bareness to the top half of the outfit . We are looking to create some length and balance here.

*Keep your makeup and hair simple and modern. If your hair is long, wear it loose and wavy or in relaxed ponytail. Short hair should be soft and stylish, in keeping with the lounge-y feel of the jumpsuit.

*An open-toed shoe or sandal works much the same as the open neckline, that I mentioned above. They work together to draw the eye up and down to create a longer silhouette. You can really change the look of your jumpsuit with the shoe choice – dress it up or down with flat sandals or heels.

*A soft sash-type belt will keep the look modern. Avoid the wide cinched waist look of the 80s. The Jumpsuit of today is more about relaxed elegance.

Here’s a beautiful example of the Jumpsuit of today. It’s by Elroy Apparel of Vancouver, Canada. It’s made of 100% Bamboo (sustainable fabric), featuring a “cross over drap neckline and drawstring waist.” It has that open bareness to the neckline that I mentioned above and it’s in a classic black color that you can dress up or down easily.

Luckily, there are tons of green options to choose from! In my eagerness, I put together this outfit to enjoy:

The boot is The Angelica Brown by Novacas. It is made out of vegan leather and runs 17″ from top to bottom, complete with a 3″ heel. A pair is $109.95 from Moo Shoes. They are also available in black.

The bag is a Double Braided Handle Vegan Leather Satchel (that’s a mouthful!) by Chinese Laundry. I love the roominess and the color! For those of you who live your bags to have a little less flava’, it also comes in black and there are several similar styles in a yummy chocolate brown.

It is made of pleather, so it’s not the greenest of bags (despite the color!). It is animal-free though. It’s $66.00 from Alternative Outfitters.

The skinny jeans are 99% organic cotton denim and 1%spandex by Del Forte. You can pick your pair up for $182.00 from BTC Elements. They also have black and white versions, too!

The Placket Tank by Ecoganik is another organic cotton creation. Ecoganik is a member of the Organic Trade Association, the OTA Fiber council committee, and the Co-op America Business Network. This pretty puppy is $68.00 from BTC Elements.

The cuff is an original handmade creation I found through Etsy. Made out of vintage silk ties by PetereneDesign, it’s a deal for $18.00.

I love this jacket so much that it’s the second time I featured it! Made of of eco-friendly linen, the shawl collar and tie belt make it classy, classy, classy. It was made by Grace & Cello. You can get it for $139.00 from the Greenloop.

The earrings are handmade out of cherry and maple hardwood. They are $20.00 and you can get them through Etsy. There is a matching pendant, but I hate when things are too matchy-matchy.

This cute empire-waist dress is made out of 100% organic cotton and is designed by Haibtude. You can get it in natural (pictured) and white. I chose natural, because it’s a little less fussier. But this outfit would work with either! The dress is currently on sale for $112.00 through Greenloop.

The wedge sandal from Vegan Shoes is a steal at $29.99. The faux-cork wedge and faux-leather make this shoe completely animal-free.

The $22.00 wooden cuff is another hand-made treasure from Etsy.

I went necklace-less with this ensemble, but if you do go for one, I’d pick something really long and beaded, or a cleavage grazing pendant with a surprise splash of color. You could also add some color with a fantastic head wrap!

However, I chose to brighten this look up with the bag. I believe purses should be colorful. While I’m loving the aGaiN Hobo bag that is made out of reclaimed fabrics (pictured), it runs high at $120.00. If I were on the lookout for something cheaper and just as chic, I’d check out Etsy. There is tons of unique, eco-friendly bags to choose from there.

Just remember to not overdo it or you could end up looking like a house-wife or someone who forgot to leave Woodstock.
