Funnyman Jimmy Kimmel, the late night talk show host whose ex-not-so-ex girlfriend Sarah Silverman “F’d” Matt Damon (that video series was hilarious) went Presidential for the November 2008 cover of GQ. Of course, a Marilyn Monroe look-a-alike is behind him whispering some sweet nothings into his ear. Talk about a cliche representation of a President .
In the first part of the GQ interview, Jimmy asked how stupid it is that a talk-show host has to wear a suit? However, he likes wearing the necktie.
In the first part of the GQ interview, Jimmy asked how stupid it is that a talk-show host has to wear a suit? Shia LaBeouf is all grown up. Looking stylish in his GQ cover I might add. Who knew this Holes star and Disney Channel cutie pie(Even Stevens) was the one to revive Indiana Jones with Harrison Ford? Shia has come a long way that for sure. Read Shia LaBeouf’s GQ interview by visiting the magazine’s website.

Patagonia Surf Store

Patagonia might spark images of bearded men trekking up Everest, outfitted with high-tech gloves and woolly hats that stave off, well, death. But the adventure brand is charting new waters with this surf-specific shop recently opened in Southern California. The brand’s surf line is less skater and more streamlined, but above all good for the environment: Board shorts are made from recycled soda bottles, while cargo shorts and button-downs meant for land are cut from organic cotton. Wet suits and surfboards are also here for hard-core surfers. Fleece hoodies in cool colors are on hand for the rest of us.

How about in San Francisco?

AB Fits

In the town where Levi’s was born, Howard Gee and Christopher Louie pride themselves on offering lesser-known denim labels at their two stores, both on the never-ending Grant Avenue. Jeans from Rag & Bone, Ra-Re, and Notify can be found at both stores, but the similarities stop there. The more artsy North Beach outpost, with its purple walls, rocks a cleaned-up Beat aesthetic. Wood planks display piles of denim, disheveled cords from Trovata, and Tartan ties by Band of Outsiders. The spiffed-up downtown location dresses the office guys in more buttoned-up attire from Paul Smith, Etro, and Oliver Spencer.

The Alden Shop

You can’t get much more classic than this New England brand, which since 1884 has produced its own line of handcrafted oxfords and slip-ons that are both smart looking and eminently comfortable. The family-run operation, focusing on tradition over trend, rarely deviates from its line of around fifty archetypal styles—meaning you can return year after year knowing you’ll find the exact ones you want. Try a pair made from cordovan leather, which will not only last forever but will actually look better with age.

Levi Strauss Flagship Store : 300 Post Street, San Francisco, CA; 415-501-0100

With four stories and 24,000 square feet of denim, San Francisco’s Levi Flagship Store offers the largest selection of Levi’s available anywhere in the world. If you’re more of a classic kind of guy, check out the limited-edition vintage Levi’s: exact replicas of old issues that retail for as much as $501 (get it? 501?). You’ll also find the new handcrafted Capital E line, high-end Levi’s REDs, and of course plenty of straight-leg 501s.

The Archive

Coated wall to wall in laminated Plexiglass, the Archive isn’t necessarily what you would call homey. But what it lacks in warmth it makes up for in originality and on-point service. Owners David Becker, Michael Kelter, and Arthur Louie cull the brightest from a few key designers, including Neil Barrett, Nice Collective, and Costume National. And because the trio is big on Japanese design, there are a couple of names you won’t recognize—like Icho, a Tokyo-based brand known for its tailored blazers. C.P. Company, Black Ring, and Cloak contribute to the shop’s right-this-moment reputation.

MAC (Modern Appealing Clothing) : 387 Grove Street, San Francisco, CA; 415-863-3011

This Hayes Valley clothing shop has a sort of “Savile-Row-meets-CBGB’s feel to it,” says owner Ben Ospital. A Dries Van Noten wool overcoat is likely to be displayed next to a pair of Lanvin trainers. Oversized Brancusi-inspired sculptures made out of cardboard look incredible under never-ending ceilings and vintage gallery lighting. But it’s not as highbrow as it sounds. As Ospital explains, “Here, it’s either about getting very dressed up or really just being a dude.” And if you’re looking for her, the store stocks art books and French perfume by Miller et Bertaux. Trust us, she’ll like it.

Wilkes Bashford

Open since 1966, this San Francisco institution is rich in old-school courtesy. “It’s all based around customer service,” says creative director Hilda Chen. “We have customers that have been coming to Wilkes for forty years.” While you’re trying on suits by Brioni, Kiton, Oxxford Clothes, and Ermenegildo Zegna, a tailor (who actually knows what he’s doing) will stay on hand to tweak the fit. And if you can’t make it to the store, a stylist will come to your home free of charge, bearing upscale threads specially tailored to your tastes.

William Stout Architectural Books

With over 30,000 titles in stock and up to 20,000 stacked on tables and shelves at any given time, this design-specific bookstore can seem overwhelming at first. Which makes sense, seeing how owner William Stout, a former architect, founded it as a resource for his colleagues. “I’ve always thought architects should have libraries as a source of inspiration,” he says. These days, the knowledgeable staff welcomes amateurs, too, and it’s not uncommon to see readers ensconced for hours, making their way through tomes like Le Corbusier’s The City of Tomorrow.

Mario’s

In this age of megamalls, here’s a much-welcome throwback with a great shoe selection and a refined soul: a place where salesmen make eye contact and wear good suits, and purchases still end with a handshake. “Our number one focus is on relationships,” says menswear buyer Simon Chan. “It just so happens we have some pretty nice clothes in the store, too.” Mario’s retains its old-school vibe by employing well-mannered staffers who care more about putting you in the right suit than selling you the most expensive one, but their collection—featuring John Varvatos, Paul Smith, and Rogan—is thoroughly modern.

Nolita

When Margit Meriweather and Katy Kippen opened Nolita two years ago in Portland’s architecturally brilliant Pearl district, they didn’t even know how to dress their own husbands. “They weren’t very fashiony at the time,” admits Kippen, who asserts that times have certainly changed. Now the duo from Montana are not only outfitting their significant others but also a bevy of Portland guys who are lining up for Rogues Gallery tees, Loomstate zip cardigans, and lots of J.Lindeberg. Of course, their loyal clientele doesn’t come without its expected Rose City quirks. “Half the people here would never want anybody to know they’re wearing expensive clothes,” says Kippen. “The other half are total brand freaks.”

Red Light Clothing Exchange : 3590 SE Hawthorne Boulevard, Portland, OR; 503-963-8888 (another location at 1111 SW Stark Street, Portland, OR; 503-294-0800)

“Everyone knows us in town,” explains Heather Jones, longtime manager of this Portland institution, “because we’re really, really big—and really, really red.” The 8,000-square-foot store, painted scarlet both inside and out, isn’t hard to spot. But the bold decor is a perfect match for the vintage rocker gear on sale, which ranges from fedoras and silk scarves to leather pants and steel-toed boots. And if you’re not in the mood to spend cash, Red Light specializes in buy-sell-trade.

With the help of GQ magazine, I’ll share with you guys the Best Men’s Stores in selected States all around America. From clothing stores, to lifestyle stores like art, books and what-nots. Let’s start with Seattle.

BlackBird

“We’re hee-haws—you know, friendly folk,” says owner Nicole Miller, who opened this stylish men’s store after struggling to find decent clothes for her husband in a town full of record stores and organic coffee. The space has a masculine, nautical vibe, with grooming products from Brave Soldier and cool kid accessories like Casio video-game watches and Surface to Air pendants displayed on rough-hewn wood planks and rusty anchor chains. Go there for flattering A.P.C. jeans, button-up sweaters by Orthodox, and chunky knit scarves from Wales that work well in drizzly weather.

Goods

Goods is something of an anomaly. It’s a legit skateboard shop with cred, but in early 2005 the four skateboarder/owners expanded their business into the shop next door. Now they dabble in high-end Prps and Tsubi denim, a slew of T-shirt brands, and sneakers you won’t find anywhere else in Seattle. You’re likely to see a dad shopping for jeans while his son tries on DC sneakers. But despite the expansion, the original skateboard shop remains intact. “We’re all skateboarders,” says co-owner Paul Williams. “We didn’t want to get away from that.”

Ian

This roomy shop with hardwood floors, exposed beams, and an endless supply of designer clothes makes good use of its size. “We tend to overbuy,” admits co-owner Cerise Lacock. T-shirts—along with denim and hoodies from Rogan, G-Star, and Loomstate—work with higher-end Martin Margiela pants, the occasional suit from Paris-bred Paul + Joe, and edgy gear like a $680 side-zip cardigan by McQ. If you feel confused by the continually updated merchandise, don’t worry: That’s kind of the point. “Brands get overexposed,” Lacock explains, “and we want to keep our stock special.”

KuhlMan — 2419 First Avenue, Seattle, WA; 206-441-1999

Scott Kuhlman is Seattle’s best-known tailor, but his popular Belltown shop isn’t Savile Row material. A former flophouse, his basement outpost houses an endless selection of Japanese denim, vintage fabrics, and leathers, from which Kuhlman will gladly cut ultraslim custom suits, coats, and narrow shirts. His calling card? “The perfect shirt collar,” says Kuhlman. “They hold their shape and come to a precise point.” The shop also features an assortment of menswear with meticulous sartorial flair from Filippa K, Kicking Mule Workshop, Merc, and J.Lindeberg.

Peter Miller : BOOKS

Longtime Seattle resident Peter Miller sees his high-ceilinged, light-filled store—a fixture on this spot for twenty years—as a monument to the artists and architects whose products he sells. Literally. “Some of the best in the Northwest have contributed to the design of it, the bookshelves and everything,” he says. “Like Rick Sundberg, who built the Frye Art Museum, and Peter Bohlin, who did the Apple Store in New York.” When you’re done admiring the place, look for graphic volumes on everything from cooking to industrial design, as well as specialty objects like Zaha Hadid vases, Tivoli radios, Stelton lamps, and Marimekko bags.
