I was going through Men.Style’s list of 21 best duffel bags the other day and as much as I was drooling over the Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren, Barbour, Bottega Veneta, Loro Piana, Ferragamo, etc, duffel bags, I started to get pissed off. Why? Because all those mentioned above combined, and the other high end designers could set you a trip to the Bahamas or Paris or a family vacation to the beach or even Disney World. I was like, “geez, is there anything for under $100?”. I hate lists like these coz most of the time they don’t cater to regular folks. It’s all about showing off. None of them consider hard-working population who’d also love to enjoy a nice duffel bag that won’t necessarily send them to the brink of bankruptcy. High end designers are cool, to the people who can afford them or who just really don’t care about money. The fashion industry can be so ridiculous sometimes. It’s the same way with Fashion Week. What some of the models wear on the runway would absolutely look like a pile of dog shit on a “Real Person”. Get real people.
Anyway, ending my rant, I was disgusted as I continued to peruse the list that I almost closed the window. Then finally I saw this Urban Outfitters Jitney Canvas Weekender. Finally, a duffel bag that’s actually realistically affordable. #16 on 21 Best Duffel Bags List is only $58. Now that’s what I call a realistic duffel bag for real hard-working people that’s not a celebrity or a movie star or Donald Trump or Sean Combs. You know the list, heh.
PS : I’ll still feature high end stuff, just wanted to get this off my chest :).

I agree. Especially regarding the stuff that shows up on runways. I actually totally ignore that stuff. I’m more interested in practical looks that are more often found in window displays at the mall! That stuff is meant to look good in order to sell, not to be “artisitc” or “haute couture.” As for the bags, I think the same thing. Take JCrew for example. Much as I’d love to have a leather postal messenger bag, there’s no way I’m paying $700 for one! I could swing a canvas duffel for $48, though. But man, some of their luggage pieces exceed my economic stimulus package for the whole family! It is a little ridiculous to think of spending the cost of 5 days at Disneyland with the whole family on one suitcase. You could buy the case, but then say goodbye to the vacation! Craziness.
