As you might know, TOMS is a cause-based shoe company that donates one pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair purchased. Pretty generous, right? So far, they have donated over 115,000 pairs of shoes and done shoe drops in Africa, South America, and recently in the U.S. to the hurricane-battered Gulf Coast areas.
TOMS just launched their new holiday project. Their goal is to donate 30,000 pairs of shoes to children in Ethiopia in 30 days.
1,000,000 men, women and children in Ethiopia suffer from podoconiosis – a disease that is caused by walking on and playing in silica-rich soil. This disease causes the feet and lower legs to swell as the silica seeps into the skin and enters the lymphatic system. They develop open sores, ulcers, infection and worse. The way to prevent this harmful disease is by wearing shoes.
