Red Hot Valentino Couture Pumps

The holidays are coming up very soon! My favourite colour is red so it’s just another of the very many reasons why I love this time of year. Red is a wonderful colour for Fall and it compliments just about everyone. There are also very many shades to choose from as well – deep wine reds, burgundy, to blue tone and coral reds. One of my favourite red shades is lipstick red and these Valentino heels have got me drooling…

These oh so pretty Valentino Couture Patent Leather Pumps ($745) are pretty amazing. They’re feminine, sexy and a bit racy. How fabulous is are the sculptural bows on the front? They’re sweet and vampy at the same time. These pumps are meant to be worn with a short dress for maximum exposure and well, drama.

Kelsi Dagger Rosabella Booties

With the influx of ankle boots or as some call them booties, it’s getting harder and harder to choose which ones to invest in. There are so many different styles, shapes, colours and textures to choose from and most of them are so cute. Questions you should ask yourself are: Do you want something simple and streamlined? Do you want embellishments? Do you want platform, heels or wedges?

I found a pair of ankle boots for you to consider in your hunt for the perfect pair. They’re by Kelsi Dagger and I must say, I totally love them.

These Kelsi Dagger Rosabella Platform Ankle Boots ($200) are dramatic without being too over the top. I like the mix of materials with the smooth nappa leather and suede rosette accent. The colours above are black/grey and aubergine (plum). If I were you I’d go for the aubergine shade because these are the type of shoes that should be the star to your outfit, not the background singer. They’re quite high at 5″ but the platform sole is 3/4″, so it’s only a little over 4″.

Are you thinking about what outfits to wear these with? I actually picture these with a simple outfit; jeans, a white tee and a taupe sweater cardigan with minimal accessories. For evenings, definitely a little black dress!

Fashion Week: Ruthie Davis Platforms

Yesterday, I posted about the shoes and fashions at the Dennis Basso show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Were you wondering who created those fabulous platform shoes? Me too! That’s why I was so excited when I learned more about them.

In the Dennis Basso Spring 2010 show, there were a mix of purple, beige and metallic gold platforms with gem-encrusted heels. These custom-made shoes were created by Ruthie Davis. Ruthie is a very talented designer that has been making shoes for Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Alicia Keys as of late. You can learn more about Ruthie and her shoes at ruthiedavis.com.

Fashion Week Spring 2010: Dennis Basso

Though I’m not incredibly familiar with Dennis Basso, I loved his Spring 2010 fashion show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. The beautiful ball gowns and party dresses with full skirts were so flirty, feminine and fun. I adored the flowing fabrics and one-shoulder designs.

Dennis Basso complemented his girly-girl fashions with open toe platform shoes. Some with ankle straps and some without, they were generally the same silhouette. For spring parties, you can’t go wrong with a platform pumps and sandals.

Let’s take a look at some of my favorite dresses (and the shoes) from the Dennis Basso Spring 2010 collection.

Ankle-Wrap Sandals at the Tracy Reese Show

With a wide assortment of floor-length gowns at some of the shows at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, it’s oftentimes hard to get a good look at the shoes. That’s one reason that I’m loving all the shorter dresses and even shorts that we are seeing in the Spring 2010 presentations.

On Monday, I fell in love with some beautiful, flirty, fun dresses from Tracy Reese. The collection included beautiful draping, vibrant color combinations and gorgeous prints. Somehow she managed to achieve a carefree and relaxed look that was fancy at the same time.

And of course, we can’t look at the dresses without talking about the shoes. Ankle-wrapping straps were the name of the game. Take a look at a few of my favorite looks from the Tracy Reese.

Fashion Week Spring 2010: Duckie Brown

Though we don’t talk that much about men’s shoes here at Shoe Blitz, we have to make an exception for the shoes on the runway at the Duckie Brown show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York this week.

The Duckie Brown Spring 2010 collection was very well received at Bryant Park. But what do you think about these shoes?

Blue is a certainly a hot color for spring and a great way to add a burst of color to a neutral outfit. However, I’m not sure these will translate well from the runway to the city streets. The bold, eye-catching suede lace-up shoes (which you also can see below in yellow) are part of the ongoing Florsheim by Duckie Brown footwear collaboration.

Over at Macys.com, they are having their online summer fashion clearance. You can save 25-50% off shoes and other apparel in “wear-now” styles. So instead of shopping ahead for next season (or picking from last season’s leftovers), you can get fantastic bargains on items that you can wear immediately.

Shoes as Weapons Through the Ages

Shoes can do a lot more than just make a fashion statement. On several occasions throughout the ages, women’s boots and shoes actually have been used as weapons. When I first went to a self defense class many moons ago, they told us, “If an attacker is holding you from behind with no weapon, stomp on his foot with your high heel. He’ll release you in pain, then you can run like heck and get out of there.”

Though that’s not the best method for getting rid of an attacker, getting stomped by a stiletto is probably pretty painful. If you have time to take off your shoes (or they fly off in a tussle), shoes can be a good improvised weapon to ward off an attack by hitting your assailant repeatedly in face with the spiked heel.

These shoe self defense tips are nothing compared to some of the more recent uses of shoes as weapons:

December 22, 2001
British citizen and Al Queda operative Richard Reid (also known as Abdul Raheem and Tariq Raja) attempted to ignite explosives hidden in his shoes on American Airlines Flight 63 from Paris to Miami. He was subdued by passengers and flight attendants while trying to light the fuse. The “Shoe Bomber” is currently serving a life sentence at ADX Florence, a Supermax prison in Colorado. If you wonder why you have to take your shoes off to go through the detector at the airport, you can blame Reid.

Most recently, during a ceremonial signing of an agreement between President George W. Bush and Iraqi premier Nouri Kamal al-Maliki, Iraqi journalist Muntader al-Zaidi threw his shoes at Bush. The news dominated world headlines for days and al-Zaidi was somewhat of a cult hero for throwing the projectiles at the not-so popular U.S. President. He was even given a bravery award by Libyan charity group Wa Attassimou. Check out the video below. Pretty good reflexes by President Bush.
