Halloween a Yes… Christmas, not so much

Knowing just how bad the economy is these days, people are doing everything they can think of to put it all aside for at least one night… and that night would be Halloween. I guess there is something in getting dressed up and pretending to be someone else for at least a few hours, or by the look of my street, for the entire month. People are decorating their homes big time in our neighborhood and the stores are certainly not cutting back on the candy that people will be handing out at the end of the month.
As far as costumes go, have you noticed that the stores are FULL of adult costumes… something unheard of when I was a kid, but from experience, pubs are busier than ever at or near Halloween and everyone comes in costume. It’s a night where there is a smile on everyone’s face and worries about the economy are left at home for the evening.
Christmas will not be as lucky, retailers fear. From what I have been reading the last few months, this seems to be the area where people are cutting back. Gift giving will not be what it once was and Christmas this year just might be more like Christmases of long ago where family and friends were what really mattered.
