Are you in the habit of losing as many tubes of lipstick as I am?? And just in case you are wondering, I never lose the budget lipsticks, it’s always the expensive stuff. It’s Bargain Day and I have found the perfect slippers at a really great price!! Actually, I was at the mall just yesterday, looking for slippers and they were either too expensive or the cut made my feet look fat. That’s right… FAT! Now leave it to Bealls to offer a great looking slipper at a price that I like. Just look at the rounded cut of the toes. The slippers that I was looking at yesterday were kind of cut straight across which made your foot look really wide. Needless to say, I didn’t buy them. And lucky for me.

*Note to those of you who are thinking about Christmas shopping already, I don’t think that anyone on your list would not like a pair of these.

Retailers Forgetting About Us

Okay, I admit it… I’m a Baby Boomer and I’ve noticed something really strange. Retailers aren’t thinking about us at all. Go to any mall and you will find that 3/4 of the fashion has been designed for the twenty something or thirty something and that’s if you are lucky! And just in case you find yourself saying that you have many years to go before you hit your forties, trust me, it comes a lot sooner than you think and before long you will be facing the same dilemma. How do you dress trendy without looking like you are trying too hard to look like your daughter??

I have a little project for you this week. Head out to the mall and do a bit of people watching. You will find the Baby Boomers either wearing (quite sad I must say) fashions far too young for their age group, or equally sad… they age themselves by dressing… matronly. I just hate that word! It’s okay for your grandmother to dress matronly, but even that might change in the coming years. Just look at the energy of Cloris Leachman as she put to shame the younger dancers on Dancing with the Stars! She’s eight-two! Granted, she might not be the best dancer, but she’s definitely stealing the show!

So what do you do?? Here’s my little trick. I have a twenty something daughter and I made her promise that if I ever dressed too old or too young, she would tell me. She has come to my rescue a few times… not because I’m dressing to young, but too old. I guess I have more of a conservative streak than I realized. The problem… there’s not enough trendy outfits for our age group to choose from. And then keeping on budget… just one more problem to think about these days.

Today’s Shopping Tip

I have this rule of thumb… try out drugstore brands first and see if they work. If they do… I have saved myself a ton of money. If they don’t, then I move on. I actually saw this idea used on a British TV show last year. The family had to decide if the food product was a generic brand or the higher priced item that had a name well recognized. The kids didn’t like the idea at all but were surprised when they couldn’t tell the difference (in some cases). I have noticed the same thing happen with some of my cosmetics. Granted, it doesn’t always work, but every once in a while I find a great product that I had ignored on previous shopping trips. What great products have you found this way??

5 Ways To Be a Better Shopper

I used to LOVE TO SHOP, but I am noticing that I can’t seem to get the same bang that I used to. I could tell you stories about lipstick that I used to buy for a couple of dollars and the afternoons at the mall when I was in my teens that my allowance would easily cover. My allowance used to be $3.00 a week… sounds kind of unbelievable now doesn’t it? Unfortunately, the cost of things simply haven’t kept up with how much we are getting paid these days and we as consumers HAVE to learn new ways to stretch our dollar. I have no idea how much allowances are going for these days, and I don’t think that I want to know, but I can tell you this. My daughter now makes 6x what my husband made an hour when we were first married and she doesn’t think that it’s enough to keep her in the lifestyle she thinks she deserves. She’s probably right. She can’t even afford to move out on her own! So, I think that this new category is going to be a regular occurrence here at Shopaholics Daily. So lets get started. Here are the first shopping tips that occurred to me this morning.

1. Don’t be a snob. Consignment and Thrift Stores really do have bargains and people are really beginning to notice! Don’t let them beat you to the best stuff!

2. Use up what you have before you buy something new. That goes for lipstick especially. We really don’t need 20 tubes now do we?? And yes, I’m talking to myself here.

3. I just finished talking about Food Courts in an earlier post and believe it or not, Britt and I can save about half what we would normally pay in a sit-down restaurant! That can really add up!

4. Take advantage of stores that are unfortunately closing due to the economy. It’s sad, but a fact of life. A word of advice though… buy just what you need, not what catches your fancy.

5. Study fashion magazines for ideas. I have put together outfits for a fraction of the price by using this method. For example, one outfit that caught my eye was a creamy brown skirt, and a gorgeous brown plaid jacket. It was a designer brand that would have cost the earth and it really was gorgeous, but I tore the sheet from the magazine and took it with me to the mall. I came pretty close to duplicating the outfit for something a whole lot more affordable. I was pretty pleased with myself… lol

That’s it for today… son and girlfriend coming to dinner tonight and I really do have to clean up the house. Now if I could only afford a housekeeper.

I read somewhere recently that a woman simply can’t have too many white blouses and I have to agree. I have quite a few of them I must say… long and short sleeve and if I can’t find something to go with a particular item, I can always rely on a white blouse, paired with a tank top to pull it all together. And now with the cool weather setting in, I’m pulling all of my winter blouses out of the spare bedroom closet so I can grab one at a moments notice! This one is On sale at at Bealls.
