The weather will be cooling down soon and we’ll be stepping out of shorts and tees and into sweaters and boots. It’s a fun time of year in terms of fashion — the luxurious textures, deep colors and cozy fabrics. Let’s check out what’s hot for fall.

Leather
Leather (and faux leather) are everywhere this season, from jackets to handbags. But also look for leather in leggings, skirts and even hats. This Magalisgarcia skirt ($650) is a fantastic choice. This neoprene skirt has a leather flower applique detail on the side. For a contrast in textures, pair this skirt with a lace or ruffled blouse.

Lace

Dramatic Shoulders
You’ll see many dresses on the rack with exaggerated shoulders, reminiscent of the 80s. But it’s not all about broad shoulders — rather it’s anything that draws the attention to the shoulders, arms and neck. Look for unique necklines and funky sleeves. One dress that I adore is this classic Ashley dress from Stop Staring! This dress features a stretch fabric that hugs your curves in all the right places. Boots and Booties

Anything Grey
Shoes, dresses, sweaters, coats — anything grey is on trend for fall. Look for grey tweeds to add a little texture to your look. This Nanette Lepore jacket is ideal. If you can only afford to add one new dress to your wardrobe this summer, make it a ruffled one. Yes, I know I just said nude colors were in, but so are brights. From lemon yellow to bright fuchsia, look for satchel, totes and clutches in bold colors. Bright patent leather bags with a little bit of texture are on trend. Look for croc-embossed bags in brilliant shades.

Distressed Jeans
Jeans that are worn in all the right places are hot right now. From skinny capris to relaxed boyfriend jeans, shop for distressed denim. A new pair of jeans that looks like you have been wearing them for years is the perfect choice.

Geometric Prints
Floral prints are always hot for summer. This season however, geometric prints are in too. From black and white tops to colorful dresses, look for geometric patterns and abstract watercolor prints. When wearing a busy print, keep your accessories and jewelry to a minimum to keep the focus on your apparel.

Best of 2008

Ruffled Blouses
Ruffles came back in a big way – in shoes, handbags, dresses and especially blouses. It was great to see feminine, romantic fashions at the forefront. With all the menswear-inspired designs early in the year, girls could be girls again in ruffles.

Patent Leather Bags
Well really, patent leather anything – shoes, belts and especially bags. Glossy patent leather adds luxury and shine to any outfit. Hopefully patent is big in 2009 as well.

Skinny Jeans
Skinny jeans look hot with everything from knee-high boots to platform sandals. These form-fitting pants aren’t for everyone but body hugging jeans are far better than their baggy counterparts.

Worst of 2008

Maxi Dresses
Blame Angelina Jolie for starting it. Blame the rest of the world for jumping on the bandwagon. These long dresses swallow your body with their flowing silhouettes. I don’t care what anyone says, these baggy, floor-length floral dresses don’t flatter any woman.

Gladiator Sandals
If you visited Shoe Blitz today (as you should everyday!) you probably know how I feel about gladiator sandals. Unfortunately this trend will be back for Spring 2009. Don’t buy them, ladies!

Boyfriend Jeans
I’m not sure why Katie Holmes (or anyone else) thought it was cool to put on a pair of oversized jeans, roll up the cuffs and head to the street. Boyfriend jeans are something you might wear on a camping trip paired with a flannel shirt – they aren’t something you should wear anywhere else.

Do you by any chance know how to run a sewing machine?? I’m only asking because I tried and gave up. Could never get the tension thingie to work for me. I can thank my lack of patience for that!! But now I wish that I had stuck with it. Just found this pattern that you can order and seeing that the fall is going to be all about the sixties, I thought that some of you just might want to try their hand at creating something from an authentic pattern. Looks pretty cool! Must point out… the price of the pattern has gone up lol…
