It’s been many years since I’ve been planning for homecoming – but I go to a friend’s mock prom quite often, so I’m almost always in formal-dress-ready mode.

I think this Speechless Strapless Bubble Dress is very cute! White/black is always hot – like, classically – and bubble dresses? Screams retro sexy. Not that you want your teenager to be sexy, necessarily. But I guarantee you that’s what she wants.

So tonight’s all about the game and tomorrow’s all about the nail salon, frantic searches for Band-aids (for those blisters you’re sure to get while shakin’ your groove thang) and enough hair spray to seal a wooden deck from the elements. Fun!

But then there’s Sunday. I always thought of it as my Day of Let-down. After all the excitement and hoopla of the preparation, the dinner, the dance and the after-party, Sunday seemed like such a bore. What was there to look forward to now?

So here’s an idea to get you out of the Sunday Slump: how ’bout you grab The Gurlz and get together for a Picture Party? Have everyone bring their digitals to view all those candid shots and relive the night. If you took a disposable camera to the dance, run it over to the 1-hour developer and grab some Taco Bell while you’re waiting. You can totally do this with your guy too, but it’s much more fun gossiping about the other Betty’s dresses with…other Betties. For some oddball reason, guys just don’t seem to get into that quite as much. Plus, they’ll be watching football. Bleh.

My thoughts: if you can tolerate it, leave all the schlack and hair accessories in your ‘do overnight so you can take even more pics at your party. Nah, don’t wear your dress, too, if that’s what you were thinking. Your Old Navy sweats will do just fine.

Sure, jewel tones were a huge trend at the Emmys (and I loved them – especially the red), but I am all over metallics for Homecoming. There’s something about them. So rich. So alluring. So fun and hip. So elegant. IMO, metallics are perfect for Homecoming, regardless of the level of formality your school’s dance has. Below, I’ll show you several gorgeous dresses, all from Macy’s, that rock metallics out. But, if your school’s dance is a little more cazh, Macy’s also has some fun metallic tunics and flowy shirts that you can pair with sleek black pants or even jeans. Mmm…shiny.

Ha! And you thought you’d get the weekend off. Nah, but this book is sooo worth it. And with Homecoming just around the bend, it should practically be required that you read this!

Now, I’m not going to be the spoiler here, but let me tell you that Aspen is someone you totally want to read about. Why? She loves Dooneys, she’s totally presh and, oh yeah, she’s pretty flippin’ smart. A great BFF, she’d make.

So check this book out over the weekend and stay tuned…there will be a pop quiz next week. No, really. I’m serious.

Eva Longoria

Okay, duh, this one should go without saying. When doesn’t Eva look perfect? I mean, really. Even though she wasn’t my total fave this time around, she still killed it and surely turned a few heads. I like the champagne color of the dress, along with its sparkle. A light, luminous makeup palette is key, though. Do not, and I mean DO NOT, put a red lipstick with this, puh-leeze! Something sheer, shimmery and metallic will do the trick.

Debra Messing

The former Will and Grace star went through an “Ewwww” period for a while, but she’s come back with a vengeance. She looks totally glam and very pulled-together here. Grey’s star Katherine Heigl has also had her share of fashion flubs, but here she’s stunning. Again with the cream dress and red lips, I know. Anyone see a trend here?

Lemme just say how much I totally adore awards shows. They are just exploding with ideas for us to swipe and make our own, aren’t they? Love it!

Christina Aguilera

Never mind the fact that her baby bump is showing in full force, this chick is hot any way you look at her. The screen siren style she’s rocking is perfect for her – and it really follows the 40’s trend that’s all over the place. Her makeup is gorgeous, the black and ivory dress is elegant and flattering and her upswept ‘do looks stunning. A definite MUST COPY look for Homecoming – minus the bump, of course!

WORST…

Hayden Panettiere

What a disappointment! We can almost always count on Hayden to look adorable, but here she really drops off the radar. Look at that dress! What in the world is she trying to hide under there? A cheeseburger value meal? A different outfit for the after-party? Another human being? I mean, YIKES! What is with all that fabric?

On a positive note, her hair and makeup do look great. She looks healthy and luminous from the boobs up. Start going any lower, however, and that’s the end of it. Yanno, I probably would have been okay with this dress if it was much shorter (knee-length or so). But not this. This is definitely a Homecoming What NOT to Wear!
