But they are actually pretty darn cool. Essentially, they are inspired by the hot denim trend that has been hitting runways in preparation for the fall season – it’s part jeans, part leggings – both of which are huge this season, and part of the larger leaning toward sleek, slim, and streamlined.

Hudson Jeans

Ben Taverniti, head denim designer for Hudson Jeans, says “The jegging is a fashion essential this season because it provides the comfort of the legging and chic design of the jean. It’s something that is very easy to wear and goes with anything in your closet.”

The great thing about jeggings is that they can be worn “high” or “low”, as in – with sneakers or heels – or whatever, which makes them fit the inner desire I always have to make outfits work from day until night.

Let it be said, I like this trend WAY WAY better than that awful wide-legged balloon pant look from last season.

Ruffles
If you can only afford to add one new dress to your wardrobe this summer, make it a ruffled one. Whether you choose a dress with a ruffled neckline (like the one from Nordstrom picture here), a ruffled hem or allover ruffles, that’s up to you. One of the most popular looks is a dress with an asymmetrical row of ruffles down the front.

Nude Hues
From shoes to handbags, nude hues are a hit this season. Off-white, cream and other nude shades are extremely flattering. Check out these nude sandals. Partner them with a nude leather tote or straw handbag.

Jeweled Sandals
Dress up your feet in jeweled flat sandals. Certainly gladiator sandals are hot once again. But if you are over that trend, look for flat thong sandals that are accented with crystals, jewels and other glitzy accents.

Bright Bags
Yes, I know I just said nude colors were in, but so are brights. From lemon yellow to bright fuchsia, look for satchel, totes and clutches in bold colors. Bright patent leather bags with a little bit of texture are on trend. Look for croc-embossed bags in brilliant shades.

Distressed Jeans
Jeans that are worn in all the right places are hot right now. From skinny capris to relaxed boyfriend jeans, shop for distressed denim. A new pair of jeans that looks like you have been wearing them for years is the perfect choice.

Geometric Prints
Floral prints are always hot for summer. This season however, geometric prints are in too. From black and white tops to colorful dresses, look for geometric patterns and abstract watercolor prints. When wearing a busy print, keep your accessories and jewelry to a minimum to keep the focus on your apparel.

Jeans are a huge staple in my wardrobe, a great pair of torn jeans can be as well. Distressed denim is HUGE this summer, if worn right – and a pair that makes your butt look great can be an instant first-date staple, too.

Readers have been mentioning that in times of recession, they are a little squeamish about spending upwards of $150 on a pair of jeans – I feel that. BUT let me say that I’ve had $20 jeans that have lasted a few washings – and pricier jeans that have lasted me years. Sometimes, like handbags, certain items are nothing short of an investment!

Sure, my first thought was, “What the ….?” But after I looked at this ensemble a bit, I fell in love with the top. This ivory v-neck shirt features a gold chain print and ruched front. It’s sweet and sexy, while also being edgy and cool. This top would work with a lot of different looks this season. I could imagine pairing it with jeans (not the the matching jeans shown!), a pencil skirt or any number of other items in my closet.

These heavily distressed jeans look hip and cool. They offer 5-pocket styling and are cropped several inches above the ankle. They have a little bit of spandex for easy fit. These jeans are priced at $198.

Hudson Jeans ‘Emily’ Super Skinny Crop Stretch Jeans
These skinny jeans (pictured) are selectively faded in the seat and thighs. They are cropped just above the ankle, so they are perfect if you aren’t fond of shorter crop pants. Get these cool jeans for $176.

Jeans are a wardrobe essential and can be worn just about anywhere. When shopping for jeans, keep in mind your body type in order to hide minor figure flaws and accentuate the positive. Follow these to tips to learn how to choose the best jeans for your body type.

Plus-Size
Don’t hide in baggy jeans. Contrary to what you might think, oversized clothes won’t disguise your weight. In fact, they’ll make you look heavier. Instead of baggy jeans,  select relaxed fit, which give you the extra room you need without being too loose. Avoid jeans with small pockets; they’ll make your butt look bigger. Dark wash or black jeans are a great choice and will make you look thinner.

Tall and thin
If you are tall and lean, select skinny jeans because they give some extra attention to hips and thighs. This will give the illusion of a more curvy figure. Choose jeans with rear pockets that are low to make your butt look higher and rounder. Lighter wash jeans also will make you look a little heavier.

Short-waisted
If you are short-waisted, avoid high-waisted pants at all cost. Instead, select low-rise jeans to help elongate the look of your torso. Flared jeans will also look good because they draw the attention away from your waist.

Petite
Katie Holmes made cuffed boyfriend jeans popular in the last year, but these aren’t for short women. If you are under 5′4, these jeans will make you look even shorter. Instead choose a pair of bootcut jeans, which will give you a longer, leaner look.

Everyone
The 5-pocket classic or bootcut jeans look good on almost anyone. Look for jeans with a small percentage of spandex for a little stretch. When trying on jeans, make sure to look in the mirror from all angles, including the rear. Bend, twist, sit, squat and do everything you might do in your jeans to make sure they fit properly. Remember, you shouldn’t have to lay down to get your jeans on and your thong shouldn’t show when you sit down.

The trends are constantly changing, and it’s hard to stay on top of them. As a way of help, I chatted with Kim McGowan, co-founder of a newly launched Markdown Alert. They track sale apparel, accessories and shoes from designers and retailers, and this leads to serious research on each season’s looks. Here’s some of Kim’s thoughts on the denim looks to go for

The trouser pant

This season it is paired with white denim which gives it a timeless, crisp preppy feel. This look is fantastic when paired with a feminine print top (tucked-in, of course) and this season?s bright-colored belt or heel trend. . The trouser jean can be dressed up or down, worn to the office or out for a casual lunch, knows no age limit and you can be assured, as it is a classic, that you will get more than one season’s wear out of it. Good examples of the white trouser from Banana Republic, Joe’s Jeans Trouser in White or the 7 For All Mankind Ginger Jean.

Slim leg denim

The skinny jean is not new to Spring 2009 but how it is being worn is. The runways were full of 80s-inspired blazers over skinny jeans and topped off with cut-out or gladiator heels. If it is too much look, take inspiration from it by swapping the boxy blazer for boyfriend cardigan with a wide belt. A more mature women or one that has a curvy shape, can get the look by replacing toothpick jeans, which hug your legs from the waist to the ankle, with a ankle-grazing cigarette-style jean. MiH Jeans The Paris Cropped Slim (pictured) is a good example of this type of jean. Really trendy skinny style jeans I recommend are J.Crew’s matchstick jean or J Brand Petite 12″ Pencil Leg.

The Denim skirt

It is also making a come back this season. Two styles are note-worthy. The first, are super-minis which look great with bohemian styled tops. The flowy tops look great over the skirt for a casual look or cinched with a studded belt for a touch of street chic. Paired with a skinny belt and a beautiful cap sleeve or ruffled front blouse and you have a subtly sexy look. Check out the Rag & Bone Denim Pencil Skirt.

Distressed, boyfriend jeans

Rolled to the bottom of the calf sport rips in the knees or legs are big right now. Katie Holmes, Rachel Bilson and few other 20-something celebs have flaunted the look in recent months by pairing the jeans with a tee and ballet flats. Some examples include Citizens of Humanity Dylan Drop Rise Loose Fit Cropped Jeans and J. Brand’s 1257 steve in camille.

Dark Denim
For a more “dressed up” look, choose dark washed denim. Dark denim is suitable for the office and looks perfect in trouser or skinny styles. Pair dark jeans with a blazer and pumps for work or a peasant top and sandals for a casual date.

Flared Jeans
If you were never quite hip to the skinny jeans trend, you might take notice that flared jeans are making a comeback. Flares aren’t the same as wide leg jeans (which many people hate). This silhouette is more fitted, like skinny jeans, but flares out from the knee down. If you like the Bohemian or hippie-chic look, these jeans will fit right into your wardrobe. Add a fringed handbag and pair of wedges.

Boyfriend Jeans
Boyfriend jeans don’t have to be overly baggy or sloppy, as made famous by Katie Holmes. Wear these relaxed fit jeans and still look pulled together by adding a belt and rolling up the cuffs to show off your shoes. For some nice contrast, pair boyfriend jeans with a romantic ruffled top or flowery prints.

Colored Jeans
Skinny jeans will continue to be popular throughout the spring and summer. Try something different by sliding into a pair of colored jeans. Grey and khaki are top choices. Don’t think you have to be super skinny yourself to wear skinny jeans. Many denim companies are offering a more relaxed version of skinny jeans that is flattering to all figure types.

Ripped Jeans
Torn denim is back again. The destroyed denim trend was a popular fixture in the grunge look of the 90s and now it’s resurfaced. This time, it’s more sexy than dirty. Strategically placed tears are revealing a lot of skin on the runways and the city streets. You don’t have to take this trend to the extreme. You can instead wear gently worn jeans with frayed edges.

Whatever type of jeans you prefer, make sure they fit. When trying on jeans look in the mirror from all angles. Bend over, squat, kneel and move around to make sure they don’t bind, tug or reveal too much. You want to be as comfortable in your favorite pair of jeans as you are in your own skin.
