I picked this up a few years ago while on Holiday in England. Yes, I know… it was heavy but I wasn’t sure that I would find it when I got home, so I grabbed it. I passed up a book on vintage hair that I found in a tiny bookstore somewhere in England (can’t remember where) but couldn’t bring myself to pay $200 pounds for it. I never forgot that book and still wonder if it’s sitting on a shelf in that dusty little bookstore. Anyway, it turns out that Decades of Beauty is readily available here and if you get a chance… grab it. You are going to love the anecdotes of women from generations past.

How High is Too High?

Every season or so shoes change. They get pointier and the heels get taller. According to this article, heels have climbed to a height of 6 inches. What’s your thoughts on this? Have you managed to wear this height and live to tell about it? If you were to design next year’s shoe, what would your shoe look like? Give us an idea of the perfect shoe… that would make you the next Jimmy Choo?

Retailers Forgetting About Us

Okay, I admit it… I’m a Baby Boomer and I’ve noticed something really strange. Retailers aren’t thinking about us at all. Go to any mall and you will find that 3/4 of the fashion has been designed for the twenty something or thirty something and that’s if you are lucky! And just in case you find yourself saying that you have many years to go before you hit your forties, trust me, it comes a lot sooner than you think and before long you will be facing the same dilemma. How do you dress trendy without looking like you are trying too hard to look like your daughter??

I have a little project for you this week. Head out to the mall and do a bit of people watching. You will find the Baby Boomers either wearing (quite sad I must say) fashions far too young for their age group, or equally sad… they age themselves by dressing… matronly. I just hate that word! It’s okay for your grandmother to dress matronly, but even that might change in the coming years. Just look at the energy of Cloris Leachman as she put to shame the younger dancers on Dancing with the Stars! She’s eight-two! Granted, she might not be the best dancer, but she’s definitely stealing the show!

So what do you do?? Here’s my little trick. I have a twenty something daughter and I made her promise that if I ever dressed too old or too young, she would tell me. She has come to my rescue a few times… not because I’m dressing to young, but too old. I guess I have more of a conservative streak than I realized. The problem… there’s not enough trendy outfits for our age group to choose from. And then keeping on budget… just one more problem to think about these days.

Curling Up With a Good Book

Beauty and Fashion Books from my Shelf

I’m sorry I can’t add photos of each of the covers, but yesterday my last year’s birthday present… a new laptop just up and died on me. And that just would have to happen the minute my husband leaves for a business trip. My daughter and I tried everything we could think of to get it working again, but no luck. So, I’m using daughter’s computer and it obviously needs replacing as well. How can you have TWO computers both decide to not work properly within a couple of days of each other?? One not at all, and now this one having an issue with graphics. Hopefully by tonight I will have figured it out or just maybe there will be two computers going through the window by this afternoon.

But enough about that… on to a more interesting topic!

The Lucky Shopping ManualI still pull this book off the shelf from time to time when I get bored silly with what’s in my closet. It has saved me many a time.

Curly Girl I have had curly hair all of my life and more often than not, I flat-iron all of those curls, but every so often I let them all fall into place, giving my hair a breather. This book has taught me tons.

Decades of Beauty Just love thumbing through this book. It starts with fashion and beauty in the 1890s straight on through to the 1990s. That covers my grandmother’s era, my Moms and mine as well. Great photos too.

I love books like this… when you get the before photos AND the after photos. The best part… you get to try out each of the looks. LOL… I’m always playing around with makeup and the techniques that you would never try without a little prompting… usually gives the best results. For example… I once tried instructions for an Asian face and my eyes suddenly took on a life of their own! Amazing what a little instruction can do.
