Project Runway Canada episode 9 recap

Project Runway Canada episode 9 recap

Original Air Date: 03/24/2009

Last week we saw the gorgeous Coco Rocha and this week’s challenge wasn’t anywhere near as fun. Iman sends the designers out to meet Brian and they go on a field trip of sorts…to the woods! OK, maybe the designers aren’t out in the wilderness, but they meet Brian who has supplies for them. The designers are working in teams, and automatically Sunny chooses Jessica, leaving Adejoke and Kim to work with each other. There are four designers, but three tents and that’s because Jason and Genvieve are back! WHAT?!

The Challenge
Brian tells the designers they’ll be spending one night at this campsite. The challenge is to create two looks – one avant garde look, and one ready-to-wear look that is cohesive to the avant garde piece. Whichever team loses will have both designers eliminated from the competition. Brian has three sets of supplies, and the designers can choose what they keep and what goes back to the workroom. Whatever goes back can be used in this challenge. Sunny and Jessica know what to do right away, while the other two teams struggle over what to send and what to keep. Genvieve takes the reigns (what’s new?) and sends nearly everything back to the workroom, claiming that she and Jason will be fine sleeping on the ground.

That afternoon and night while hanging out, the designers break off into their cliques, but Kim shows her true colors once again. Sitting with Jason at the campfire she tells him that Genvieve will try to take over the designs, so he has to be firm with her. This girl will throw her own grandma under the bus, I swear. Genvieve shows up and Kim quickly shuts her mouth. If she thinks that those two teams will end up in the top four, she’s insane. They’re all competing against Biffi and Sunny! King and queen of construction and tailoring and none of the other designers stand a chance when it comes to technical skill.

In the Workroom
The next day the designers head back to the workroom to get started on their projects. Sunny and Jessica’s direction is futuristic with quilted jackets and black and silver as the colors. Kim and Adejoke struggle finding a cohesive theme, but end up with something they’re both pleased with. Adejoke is hardly pleased with working with Kim and hopes it doesn’t end up costing her the prize. Genvieve and Jason are creating a good look, and Brian likes it and thinks the two ideas read well together. The skirt is very avant garde, but the construction of it already looks poor imho.

Everyone gets to call their family members or significant others, but Kim’s are nowhere to be found. She’s in tears and tells us that she has “no fancy job” to go home to, and that no one on her short list of people is available to talk when she telephones them. Sob. This is what happens when your personality resembles that of the Wicked Witch of the West. She goes on to whine that if she loses the challenge “because of Adejoke” she’ll be angry. As if Adejoke will be the reason that they lose! Give me a break, Kimmy.

The next day the models arrive for a fitting and Kim’s bottom fits her model about three sizes too small. Jessica is running into a similar issue with her jacket, which fits the model very tight, especially under the arms. Adjustments are made all around and the models are able to walk down the runway without looking like a hot mess. Brian comes in to check on the designers and Adejoke explains that while she likes the challenge, she thinks Kim’s skill level is far lower than her own. Brian agrees (who wouldn’t?) and tells her to make the best of it. Watching Kim work compared to the other designers is a joke. The technical skills aren’t there, and it shows when you’re trying to create a garment in about 20 hours total. Genvieve’s stance on this challenge is, “If we don’t win, that’s retarded.” Nice. I love an eloquent girl.

On the Runway
This week’s guest judge is designer Rachel Roy (a.k.a. Damon Dash’s wife).

Sunny – Gorge!
Jessica – I love this. I’m too busty to wear it, but it is amazing on top!
Genvieve – Construction on top is brilliant; the skirt leaves something to be desired.
Jason – Nice.
Kim – Not great. The pants are sort of a disaster.
Adejoke – Cute, but just cute.

The judges love Jason and Genvieve’s pieces and think they read well as a story. Kim’s tailoring is ridiculed, especially because her garment standing next to Adejoke’s is a disaster as far as construction. Adejoke’s craftsmanship is great, and Sunny and Jessica also win praises for both their design and construction. Biffi’s cap sleeves are brilliant, and I love the way she added the buckles from the sleeping bags around the waist and collar of the jacket. Too cool!

The designers are dismissed from the runway and when they’re backstage Kim attacks Jessica’s jacket, which was too tight on her model (though it didn’t show on the runway). She continually jokes, “I thought it was funny they kept commenting on the construction because she couldn’t even lift her arms…I mean, could she move? I was just laughing down at my end of the runway.” What end is that? Oh right, the LOSING end.

In Deliberation
Adejoke and Kim are clearly not as strong as a team as the other designers and the judges discuss this. Genvieve’s dress is loved by everyone, including Rachel Roy. I do not love this skirt at all. The silhouette is one we’ve seen a ton, and the overall look is cheap. I mean it LOOKS like it’s made of camping materials. The judges also commend Jason’s construction and it’s clear that they love Sunny and Biffi, who rule imho. I really don’t know who I want to take the big prize because I love both of them so much.

The designers come back out on the runway and Iman announces this week there are two winning teams because the scores were identical. Sunny and Jessica are safe, as are Jason and Genvieve. This means Adejoke and Kim are sent packing, and I’m sad to see Adejoke leave. She is a sweetheart and had great tailoring skills, so she’ll be missed. Kim…PEACE! She tells us she plans to get drunk and leaves on a bitter note…just like she started.

Next week – surprise guests and someone is ousted giving us the final three and thus the designers that will present at Toronto fashion week!
