Andy Warhol is known for changing the way the world looked at and perceived art. He took familiar images, shot them full of saturated color, and turned something as simple and common as a Campbell’s soup can label and turned it into fine art.

The latest release in the Bond No. 9 fragrance series is Andy Warhol Success is a Job in New York will be out this Fall, October 2009. The bottle features Warhol’s iconic dollar sign image, set on a black background. Money is both the inspiration and the focus for this unisex scent. It features a citrus and spice top note, a floral middle, and a base with a combination of classic oriental notes. I’m not sure how that translates to money, it feels a bit more “hippy” to me, but I’m going with it.

I like a unisex scent, as I mentioned a few days ago. The Bond No. 9 people sent me a sample of the fragrance to try. No full size bottle, again. Dang. No matter. I used every last drop of the Andy Warhol Success is a Job in New York eau de parfum. I loved it! (Yes, with the exclamation point). There’s something about the Cardamom, it draws me in every time I find a scent that contains it. Without it and the Coriander, I think that this parfum would be nice, but not unique.

Fragrance notes:

Top note: Coriander, Cardamom, Mandarin, Bergamot
Middle note: Jasmine, Tuberose, Rose, Plum, and Pimento
Bottom note: Vanilla, Patchouli, Amber

I’m absolutely giddy with the announcement of this newest scent by Bond no 9. They’re really developing a lot of new products, but the design of the package alone almost sells this one to me straightaway. I’ve also been a huge Warhol fan, having enjoyed a visit to the Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, as well as a great documentary on his relatives in eastern Europe.

The scent is described as: Like all the scents-in-progress that we are designing for our Warhol repertory, this one is of ambiguous male-female gender. We conceived of Silver Factory as a smooth, smoky, spicy blend of interlacing incense (a key scent of the ‘60s), wood resin, and syrupy, seductive amber. But just to complicate things, we gave it a heart of jasmine, iris, and violet—a scent that Warhol was especially fond of. These slightly dissonant florals combine to evoke a metallic effect—that of warmed-up, molten silver, And then, for the merest hint of coolness, we threw in a handful of cedarwood.

Honestly, if anyone would be happy that their name was put on something so glamorous and shiny, it would be Andy. And the next best thing from the money going right into his pocket, is that the money goes to the Warhol Foundation. And that money, honey, is not small – $230 for 100ml (about 3 oz). But you have a few months to save up or sell a kidney, it launches in December.

The perfume collection has really grown to be something quite awesome, and recently Bond launched a signature perfume and cologne for Saks Fifth Avenue. Amazingly, here in Richmond we have our own (tiny) Saks, and I spent a few lovely minutes chatting with the mistress of the perfume counter and testing some new scents.

First, I tried what I had come for: Saks Fifth Avenue for her. I got…A lot of gardenia. Basically, your average joe on the street couldn’t distinguish this perfume from Marc Jacobs. To me, it seemed a touch sweeter. That said, if you’re a gardenia/white floral freak, it’ll be something you should try.

The cologne offering was less…”commercial”, let’s say. It’s a more grownup version of Cool Water. I didn’t dislike it, though. It is described as: Sicilian bergamot to keep you extra cool, and followed by cardamom, amber, and cedarwood for a cool finish and sexy warmth.

I think the winner of the night was really Acqua di Parma’s Colonia, and Fire Island. Something in me must be longing for the beach that I never visited as a child…..
