I’ve been making many of my own products for years, layering coconut body wash with thick sandalwood/patchouli body butters, amber oils, bath products and essential oils. So what I set out to do was create a fun, sexy fragrance that really captured the beach with soft, gentle touches in a way that lingers. I didn’t want a heavy perfume for you to swim in; I wanted you to feel bathed in soft, natural scents that were inviting and flirty, and of course a super sexy one to “seal the deal”.

Pamela Anderson, a long time supporter of PETA, made sure that her fragrance was cruelty-free, natural, with a vegan base. She also wanted it to be affordable, for the “…hard-working momor young woman out there.” You can find Malibu and Malibu Night at CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens, Nordstrom, and Sears. Pamela Anderson Malibu & Malibu Night

In Bloom, the fragrance that Witherspoon created with AVON, is a Floral, but it’s warmly grounded with Woody and Oriental notes. The combination makes In Bloom womanly, rather than girly, which I think is a smart choice because it appeals to a much larger audience.

AVON sent me a sample to review and I could not wait to see the bottle in person. I wanted to smell it, sure, but that bottle looked so cute in the press coverage. I think I’ve been pretty clear about my love of flower-topped bottles… this one is lovely. I think it’s a Gardenia. It looks like it could be a fully-opened Rose, but there are no rose notes, so I’m going with Gardenia.

After wearing the fragrance all day, it has mellowed to a soft Jasmine-y scent. Very nice. Classy, but not uptight at all. Definitely something you’d wear on a first date.

Reese Witherspoon’s In Bloom

Breast Cancer Awareness: Forever MC

Kim Kardashian will be launched through Sephora late this Winter, in February 2010. The launch will be an exlusive with Sephora, but I don’t see any mention if it’s to be carried there exclusively forever or just for the launch. It will reasonably priced in two sizes. One is a purse-size rollerball .33 ounces, for $16. The larger eau de parfum spray will be 3.4 ounces, for $65.

The fragrance notes will include Jasmine, Tuberose, Gardenia, Tonka Bean, and Sandalwood. Kardashian says she has learned a lot throughout development of the project and she believes “…that end result is the perfect extension of my own personal style.”

Are you interested in trying the Kim Kardashian fragrance?  I think that the notes sound interesting – definitely grownup and not sweet. I hope I get a chance to review it.

Kim Kardashian Launches in February

The ad gives 30 days worth of beauty advice such as:

1.  Go natural – and forgo the contrasting lip liner.
15. Dress in complicated pinks – like a “champagne peach.”
22. Buy him something in brown. Masculine – yet warm and comforting.

I remember Stetson from way back and I’ve already written about Halle Berry’s scent, but I had no idea that Faith Hill and Tim McGraw had fragrances. McGraw Southern Blendis actually Tim McGraw’s second scent. Are there any celebrities out there that don’t have scents either out or on the way?

I noticed that Faith Hill Parfums  comes in a bottle that reminded me very much of Chloé Eau de Parfum Intense. The rectangular shape and the little black bow – okay, it’s mostly the little black bow. I couldn’t find a photo that I can use, but you can peek at the bottle here. The notes sound pleasant enough – a little fruit, a lot of floral, the warmth of musk.

Top note: Pear, Neroli, Pink Peony
Middle note: Magnolia, Jasmine, Gardenia
Bottom note: Cashmere Skin Musk, Iris, Vetiver

McGraw Southern Blendis described as earthy and woody. The notes sound good, but I have to admit, I’m a big Tim McGraw fan, so I’m biased. (He’s so darn manly).

Top note: Grapefruit, Star Anise, Bergamot
Middle note: Lavendar, Violet Leaves, Whiskey Accord
Bottom note: Vetiver, Amber, Tobacco

30 Days of Beauty and Fragrance

“Collaborating with Lighthouse Beauty was a really creative, innovative process,” said Kardashian, who also has a beauty and fashion blog, kimkardashian.com, and operates a Calabasas, Calif.-based clothing boutique, Dash, with sisters Khloe and Kourtney. “What’s so different about their approach is that they have worked closely with me on all aspects of my fragrance, the bottle, the juice, and even our distribution strategy so I can develop a product that truly represents me and speaks to my fans. Because of their commitment to including me in the process, the fragrance really captures who I am.”

So far, there is no word on what we can expect from the scent itself. Lighthouse Beauty is a new company made up of a group of movers and shakers from the entertainment and beauty worlds. One of the partners, Curtis Jackson, also known as “50 Cent,” will be launching his own signature scent last this Fall, 2009.

I’ll share more information about both scents as I find it. If I had to speculate, I’d guess that Kim will go for something in a bold, but feminine scent. 50 Cent? I have no idea what that man smells like, but I’m very curious and I look forward to sampling his “signature scent.” He’s a successful business man and I’m betting he’s got some talented people working on his fragrance.

Care To Smell Like Kim Kardashian?

No, I’m not kidding.  Apparently, he’s having some trouble raising funds for a memorial library, so he’s jumping on the Paris/Gwen/Diddy bandwagon, hoping to make his fortune in fragrance.  The President in the perfume industry?  Why not? It seems that everybody has their own scent-, clothing-, liquor line these days. 

DALLAS, Tex. (CAP) – While ex-presidents in eras past have all faced the daunting challenge of trying to raise large amounts of cash to fund their presidential libraries, the current and soon-to-be-ex Commander-in-Chief has been finding it particularly difficult to do so.

Part of this has been his approval ratings, part of it the economy, both of which have been in the toilet the past few months. Short of an executive library bailout, what’s a W to do to raise cash in these troubled times?

“It’s like the smell of a brush-clearing cowboy, in the rain,” President Bush quipped at the $1000-a-plate dinner thrown to launch his signature scent, W. “Kind of a steely determinatory thing, with a smoky undercurrent.

“Long after I leave Washington, you’ll still be smelling me, that’s for sure,” Bush told the gathered dignitaries before whistling for the chili course to be served.

While W signals the first time that a president has launched his own fragrance line, it is not the first time that unconventional fundraising has been used to raise money for post-office memorials such as libraries and foundations.

…Profits from W, which goes on sale later this month, are expected to raise nearly half of the $1.2 million that Bush’s Southern Methodist University library will cost. Advance orders for W can be placed through the Southern Methodist University website at http://www.smu.edu.

President Bush’s Celebrity Fragrance

Sometimes (you know when I’m talking about) you really WANT to smell like a rosebud dipped in marshmallow fluff.  That’s how I would describe Mariah Carey’s new perfume.  It really is something different, like a “Gourmand-Floral.  It is not dissimilar to another celeb perfume, Britney Spears Midnight Fantasy.  But if you love Mariah, and I can see how you might, because her musical talent far surpasses that of any pop starlet these days, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed at all.

The bottle is also very girly and decorated with a butterfly.  Since the ad I found advertises it at Macy’s, I’d look for it there before any other stores.

Can Britney Do It Again?

Despite the hoopla about celebrity fragrances slowing down – and the constant bizarre behavior of Britney Spears-Elizabeth Arden hopes for a hit one more time.

Spears’ latest fragrance, Believe Britney Spears, is due out in mid-October. Arden hopes it performs as well as the previous launches. Spears is said to have sold more than 10 million bottles of fragrance since her first scent, Curious Britney Spears, launched in September 2004. Spears’s second scent, Fantasy Britney Spears, was released in September 2005.

The scent, by International Flavors and Fragrances, has top notes of guava pulp and golden tangerine; a heart of honeysuckle and linden blossom, and a drydown of patchouli aura, sensual amber and pink pralines. One of the keys to Spears’ success has been “dead on” scents that tweak the nose of shoppers. The collection will include eaux de parfum in three sizes – 1 oz. for $38, 1.7 oz. for $48 and 3.3 oz. for $58 – as well as a 6.8-oz. body soufflé for $25.

Spears have been growing up through her fragrances and the Believe bottle is much more sophisticated than past products. Curious had a playful blue atomizer; Fantasy was an opaque fuchsia orb studded with lime green rhinestones. Believe’s bottle is a pale-peridot glass fashioned into a tasteful faceted shape resembling a triangle. A silver plate with Spears’ signature is affixed to the top of the bottle. Believe’s outer carton is white with pink, magenta and green metallic dots. Believe will be sold in about 1,800 department store doors in the U.S., including Macy’s, and will also be sold globally. As well, it will be sold online at britneyspearsbelieve.com. It will roll out globally in January. National advertising will debut in October magazines.

While the company declined to comment on projected sales or advertising spending, industry sources estimated that Believe would do at least $10 million at retail in the US in its first year on counter, with upward of $6 million expected to be spent on advertising and promotion.

Spears is not scheduled for personal appearances, although that is being left open should the pop star decide to change her mind. Can Spears still sell a scent? It has been reported she is already cutting a studio album which has a positive buzz. Arden’s chief Scott Beattie isn’t sweating Spears’ quirky behavior when it comes to selling scents.
