L.A. Tunic by Desira Pesta

Oh, Desira, why do you always hit me where it hurts? Right in the “I’m broke, but I want that” center of my being. How did you know that I’m totally obsessed with purple, florals, silks, and drapey, amorphous things? Am I so transparent? Maybe, but check it:

The simple gathered style means that this blouse can be worn a number of ways. Me? I’m thinking of it tucked into a short, high-waisted tulip skirt with granny boots and sixty-five strands of silver chains. But there’s also a skirt that goes with it, and it’s available as a set. Which makes …read more

The Future Has Begun Dress by Desira Pesta

Oh, Desira, you’ve done it, again…In case y’all haven’t been paying attention, Desira Pesta is one of my absolute favorite designers on the indie front, and she’s coming out with some new stuff that is completely crazy. This dress is dead sexy and once twice three times a lady, and if I was ten years younger, I would probably wear it everywhere, including to the corner store for a soda pop. Check it:
But this dress deserves something way better than diet coke to accompany it. Champagne, anyone? Anyways, the dress is silk chiffon and velvet, and while Pesta’s choice of …read more

Clever T-Shirt by Desira Pesta

Truth in advertising, that’s what I’m interested in. And this totally clever tee by indie darling, Desira Pesta, is exactly that. Plus, it’s goldenrod, and how often do you get to describe something as goldenrod?
You can’t see it in this pic, but there’s a hilariously haggard portrait of Woody Allen in the lower right hand corner. I really dig the sketchy, floating, collaged feeling of the design, plus the combo of mint and black on goldenrod. Ha! I said it again. Goldenrod goldenrod goldenrod. Okay, I’m done. Available for $35 from Desira Pesta.

Sobriquet Ensemble by Desira Pesta

If you’ve been paying attention to this blog, you may have noticed that one of my favorite independent designers out there is a witty Brooklynite by the name of Desira Pesta. She is my first stop when shopping for a certain kind of special occasion like, say, a fashion show or my bachelorette party. Her work is handcrafted and cutting edge and totally green. I am totally dying for this off-kilter and adorable one-of-a-kind Sobriquet ensemble.
The tee shirt alone is totally cute. It is made of a delicious pale grey jersey fabric that is soft and comfortable. I love the …read more

Why Shop Indie Fashions?

What’s the point of buying from independent designers when the stuff at the mall is so much cheaper? If the answer to this question is not obvious to you, please allow me to elucidate.
Independent designers are real people. This may sound obvious, but sometimes it’s hard to put a face to an article of clothing. For the most part, when you support independent designers, you are helping an actual person pay their bills and participate in our global economy. You are also less likely to be supporting sweatshops, which aren’t good for anyone.
You are also getting more for your money. …read more
