Spiky Fun with Pearls

Pearls are one of those materials used to make jewelry that seem classic and timeless.
Unlike some materials, pearls seem to exude their own restrained elegance…
But what happens when you add spikes and pearls together??
Some really great jewelry!
Japanese jewelry designer, Saya Hibino has paired classic pearl stud and drop earrings with some decidedly unusual accents.  Her new earrings combine white, gray and black pearls with little rows of either sterling silver or gold spikes:

The spikes turn the pearl earrings into something very hip and contemporary – but still totally wearable.  These are her gray pearl earrings with 14kt gold spikes, on …read more

Weekend Etsy Picks

Today’s Weekend Etsy Pick is going to be a little different.  Instead of profiling one designer, we’re going to check out several designers who’s work all falls into one theme.
This Wednesday is Remembrance Day or Veteran’s Day, depending on where you live.  In Canada and England, red poppies are worn to remember those who lost their lives in the different wars.
While these poppies aren’t the ones that are traditionally worn, I think it’s still appropriate to wear them in memory.

This felted poppy necklace is by AVA Original Felted Art and is made using merino wool.  It’s adjustable, depending on how …read more

Colorful Earrings at the MTV Europe Awards

The 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards took place in Berlin yesterday evening.
Like almost any award show, there was a mix of high fashion, trends and some… interesting choices by some of the stars.
Singer Joss Stone sported a serious pair of colorful earrings:
I love the color contrast between her hair and the shades of blue and turquoise that the pave hoop earrings are made with.
If you’d like to try out a pair of colorful hoop earrings, but aren’t sure if you want to go quite that big, I’ve got a few fun and stylish picks to choose from.
The tile hoop earrings …read more

Elegant Jewelry Made From River Rocks?

When you say the word “jewelry”, most people think of something shiny and glittery, made with silver or gold – maybe with diamonds or other gemstones.
The jewelry designers from Turtle Love Committee want to change the way you think about jewelry.  Their clean, simple and elegant designs feature river rocks.
That’s right, river rocks.
Rocks that people have gone out and found on the banks of local rivers, that have been polished by the water and pebbles until they’re smooth.
And guess what – the jewelry is lovely!

The Sheridan pendant is made from a single rock, found in Upper Michigan.  It’s strung on …read more

Weekend Etsy Pick

Fall has arrived with a gust of wind and snow in my neck of the woods… which has inspired my Etsy pick for the weekend.
The trees are rapidly losing their leaves, but at least there are leaves you can wear year-round that will never fade or drop!
Etsy jewelry designer “Made By Sam” has an extensive collection of jewelry made with semi-precious stones and metal leaves or branches – perfect for helping you remember what leaves look like in the middle of winter
Here are a few of my favorite pieces from their huge online shop:

These earrings feature matte gold-plated …read more
