When it comes to facial cleansers, I am usually a no-frills Cetaphil type of gal. I prefer to save my money, energy and excitement on moisturizers, sunscreens and eye creams — the big guns of skincare.

Every once in awhile, though, particularly when the weather warms up and I begin daydreaming of little towns in Provence where orange blossoms really do encircle home gardens and parks, I crave a little something more. And L’Occitane Extra Gentle Cleansing Milk is there for me, orange blossom water and all.

L'Occitane Extra Gentle Cleansing Milk

At $20, the milk cleanser is a bit pricier than drugstore brands, but worth it. It only takes one dab of the silky solution, which is laden with orange blossom water, Shea butter and something called linden flower, to effectively remove make-up and dirt. It’s also ideal for those with super-sensitive and dry skin, as you can bypass the use of water altogether and simply remove the product with a tissue.

But the best part, the absolute best part about most of L’Occitane’s products are their refreshing, invigorating and utterly relaxing scents. It’s like a shot of aromatheraphy in a bottle.

Having tried a ridiculous number of skin care products over the years, it only takes a couple of tries before I know if a product is right for my skin. This is one of those incredibly personal decisions – no matter how many reviews your read or recommendations you get from your friends, your skin knows what it likes and should have no problem telling you when there is something on your face that is only irritating matters.

Image: Newscom

First, think about what kind of skin you have. Oily? Skip heavy cream moisturizers. Dry? Alcohol is not going to be your friend. Sensitive? Proceed with caution on all fronts.

It should be fairly straightforward to figure out what kind of skin you have based on the concerns you are trying to counteract or alleviate. However, keep in mind that it is better to proceed cautiously and not overestimate each fault – just because you think you have oily skin does not mean that choosing extra strength acne zapping formulas are going to balance everything out. Just the same, you may do more harm than good (and clog your pores in the process) if you unnecessarily slather on thick ‘hydrating’ creams.

Don’t assume because a product is labeled with words like “all natural” and “organic” or the price is super high that the product is necessarily worthwhile and agreeable for your skin. Sometimes an inexpensive solution is the best one – and all natural can still irritate your skin if there is an ingredient that you are sensitive or allergic to.

Finally, don’t neglect to spot test a new product. It may seem like overkill, and most likely your skin will react just fine. But in the off chance that there is something that leaves a small patch of skin a little red and itchy…it’s that better than full blown irritated across your face, isn’t it?

Take your time and try things out. You will get to know what your skin likes and quickly return or discard products that are lackluster!

I love Neutrogena, how about you? I got so excited when I saw the commercial of this nifty little facial gadget called Neutrogena WAVE. It supposedly washes off dirt, oil, and makeup without leaving your face dry.
Attach a cleansing pad (comes with the kit) in the attachment head. Activate the foaming pad by holding WAVE under running water. Push a button to turn it on then gently massage your face with it. Buy more cleansing pads for refill once you used up all the 14 pads that initially comes with the Neutrogena WAVE kit.
