Ayka Yasis is an artist’s designer. She learned how to sew out of boredom. Her muses include Mark Rothko, Leonora Carrington and Madonna and, instead of chasing trends, she scrutinizes, mocks and deconstructs them. If that isn’t enough to convince you she’s the coolest girl in Queens, NY, maybe this will do it: she didn’t go to school for fashion and chooses colors and fabrics based on what she likes.

In honor of Mardi Gras, I would like to introduce all y’all out there to local favorite designer, Harold Clarke. You may have seen his designs in magazines like Southern Bride, and if you live within 100 miles of Louisiana, then Mr. Clarke is a man who needs no introduction.
His signature styles made Delta Burke a style icon, and every southern socialite, debutante, and bride-to-be inevitably finds themselves panting outside the window of his French Quarter Showroom. Gowns begin at $2000 from Harold Clarke Haute Couture.

While indie originally was used to refer to films and music that were not attached financially to a big name studio, indie fashion has crept into the mainstream vocabulary to refer to independent designers working and making a name for themselves without the financing and safety net of a …read more
