Bailey and Epaulet Classic Fedora

A good quality classic fedora is a wardrobe staple for men and women of all ages. I just found the perfect fedora that is a collaboration between Bailey Hats, a hat company that has been producing classic designs since 1922, and Epaulet, my favorite Brooklyn boutique that features new and unique independent designers. Bailey and Epaulet came together and designed the “Rudie” fedora after the 1960’s Rude Boys from Kingston, Jamaica who listened to ska and reggae and dressed like soul singers from the U.S.

Rudie Stingy Brim Fedora in Black $60

The Rudie is made of LiteFelt, which is “a durable virgin wool that is crushable and Teflon-coated for water and stain resistance.” It is handmade in Pennsylvania in a traditional fedora style that is still fashionable today. It has a grosgrain ribbon band and a small peacock feather on the side.

I love this hat because it has the perfect mix of traditional and modern. It could look great on your Grandpa with his tweed jacket or on your sister with her skinny jeans and boyfriend cardigan. It’s so versatile and your boyfriend/husband will borrow it from you!

With the popularity of menswear-inspired looks this Fall, the fedora will again make a strong showing as one of the most stylish hats of the season. I just discovered La Cerise Sur Le Chapeau, which means “the cherry on the hat” in French and is a cute little adaptation to “la cerise sur le gateau” or “the cherry on the cake.” How clever for the designer also named Cerise! Cerise Bentz created La Cerise Sur Le Chapeau in 2004 as a small workshop in Paris that designs and creates gorgeous handmade hats for men and women. The designs are retro-inspired and infuse modern elements into traditional hat styles that have a place in fashion history.

Don’t Get Hat Hair: Wearing a Fedora

If you haven’t noticed while out at brunch recently, more and more chic ladies are opting for the fedora.

And why not? It’s a classic fashion staple and looks hot with virtually ANYTHING…except…perhaps, your hair.
Take this luscious Rosette Bow Cloche from Nordstrom for instance.

Many fedoras have a slightly manly vibe to them – this one is more girlie – but still, you need to show your feminine side by styling your hair beneath it. (Rather than hiding/piling your hair like a lot of women may decide to do.)

This is essential in looking like a sexy woman in a hat, and not a woman trying to dress more masculine!

Hair is the secret to sensuality, we already know that. “Many women just plunk a hat on top of their everyday hairstyle. Without much thought to their hair, this will create an unflattering effect, especially if you have long or full hair,” says Suki Duggan, who owns Donsuki Townhouse Salon in New York City.

Suki says that when wearing a fedora, we have several options. “If you want a laid back look, wear your hair down but a little messy. The softness of your hair with the harsh angles of the hat make a great pairing. For a sultry look, drawn hair back into a ponytail or bun underneath the fedora, this makes the focus your face and creates a very sexy look. I love this look for night.”

So, take Suki’s advice and get out your hat (and hat-approved) hair. Bonus? The rain can’t touch you!

A lot of fedoras look the pretty similar these days, so it’s exciting to find a unique take on the traditional hat design. This is a striking black and white fedora from Armani Exchange. The unique x-pattern of the basketweave is created with a constrasting black and white straw. It has a black grosgrain ribbon band and black edge. I think this hat has a lot of style!

Logo Straw Fedora $38

With the combination of light and dark colors, this is a great fedora for end of summer and transitioning into beginning of Fall. Since the hat such a bold pattern, I would pair it with dark denim and a simple colored top. Don’t try to push the black and white theme too far with this one…

Another Cute Straw Fedora

I know that I’ve posted about a lot of straw fedoras this summer, but they really aren’t as easy to find as you might think…so I tend to want to share a find when I see a good one! There is always such a huge selection of winter fedoras and it’s not as easy to find a light and breezy straw fedora that you can wear in the summer.

The fedora is a great hat because it falls in line with the menswear-inspired styles that we are seeing so much of lately. We will be seeing many more fedoras and other typically male hats with feminine details in the Fall.

This is probably my favorite straw fedora that I have found this summer. It is cute and light and affordable! It has just the simplest design that works.

Coach Has New Poppy Line

Coach has a new line that debuted in July called Poppy. Poppy is intended as a budget-friendly line for Coach, with prices staying just slightly below what most Coach products would cost. The prices are barely lower, so I would say that the main difference between the two lines is the use of color. Just like the name suggests, the collection is full of bold saturated colors like fuschia, turquoise, purple, and orange.

Poppy is designed for a younger crowd with rhinestone tiaras, shiny metallics, and tons of saturated colors on everything! This collection is definitely not about subtlety. Even though the line is designed with the Gossip Girl-aged crowd in mind, with a fun summer look there are definitely some items that adults will be sporting as well.

Coach Poppy New Fedora $178

I love this fedora! This is one of my picks that adults could wear because it has a great mix of the classic Coach logo pattern with just a tiny accent of the new Coach Poppy logo pattern. This is the only hat in the Poppy collection, but I hope they do more!

Adult are probably not going to be into this one, but there is a cute little tiara in the Poppy collection. At $148 this is definitely not for Halloween! As far as tiaras go, I like that it has delicate pave diamonds and large enamel pieces rather than the tons of rhinestones.

The Best Beach Fedora

Last time I was in Hawaii I was looking everywhere for a casual straw fedora that I could wear on the beach and then wear while walking around town afterwards. I love the floppy sun hat, but if you have a big one then it looks a little silly when you try to wear it to an after beach event. The straw fedora is the perfect hat to wear over messy beach hair. You can wear it to the beach and then pair it with a cute cover-up to go shopping or have dinner after your day at the beach.

I wasn’t able to find one then, but I just found the perfect one online at Killer Dana Surf Shop.

Roxy Betty Fedora in Brown $26

This is just exactly what I have been looking for! I love the extra lacey design at the top for lightness and air flow through the hat. It’s important to keep cool while protecting your face from the sun. The tan straw pairs perfectly with the multi-colored pastel fabric band.

Roxy Betty Fedora in Black $26

This is another version of the Betty Fedora in Black. I love how they created a totally different look for the same hat with a more geometric design for the air circulation holes and the fabric band. The red cross-stitching on the band is a great contrast to the black straw.

As super sexy as she is, I usually am not impressed with Megan Fox’s sense of style. Her clothes are usually a little too much trashy and not enough classy, but she is fairly new to the Hollywood scene so I will give her some time to catch up. (We all remember how Nicole Richie dressed back when she was on the Simple Life…quite a change from the fashion icon she is now).

Megan Fox’s Casual Look

The Unisex Trilby Hat

Although historically associated with Orthodox Judaism or London in the 1900’s, today the trilby style hat is a very stylish accessory worn by both men and women. The trilby hat looks similar to the fedora with a narrow brim and an indented crown, but the trilby has a slightly narrower flat brim. Some could say that the trilby and fedora are interchangeable words for the exact same hat, but I’ve just discovered this new “trilby” and would like to try to make a distinction between the two! The trilby is becoming more recognizable in pop culture as it’s been seen many times on Justin Timberlake and Samantha Ronson.
