When I have a little bit of time to prep myself which is far in between these days, I usually turn to my trusted curling iron. Adding waves to my hair adds a little bit of styling in my long hair which I wear down most of the time.

To achieve this look, I actually shared the step by step process at Beauty Bento Box back in October of 2007. I’ll repost it here for reference :

1. Apply mousse while wet then blow dry
2. Hold the curling iron vertically, gather sections of hair in between the barrel of the iron. Hold for 20-30 seconds. Depends how curly you want it. Keep holding the iron in vertical position.
3. Repeat process. Don’t pick the curls until all sections are done.
4. Use your fingers to pick the curls.

An essential curling hair tip I have is to keep holding the curling iron in vertical position for this kind of waves. Horizontal position will achieve a different kind of waves on your hair.

I have choppy bangs right now but I still take out my curling iron once in a while to give my hair some waves when I have time. I don’t curl my bangs though, just the rest of my hair. It actually looks pretty if I say so myself. I have no pictures though  because I find myself always in a hurry afterwards. Just imagine the pictures above with bangs .

I Turn To My Trusted Curling Iron For Curls

A couple of weeks before I started writing for Beauty Gizmo, funny thing happened to my really old hair dryer. It just died. It just completely blew up and died. It was one of those funny things but not really. Know what I mean? It was an old hair dryer though so it wasn’t really a surprise. Nevertheless, I considered it a major beauty disaster. I also found it ironic how and when it happened. See, my routine after shower is as follows :

• dry up
• brush my teeth
• moisturize, moisturize, moisturize

Then I would apply mousse all over my hair for volume. I kind of massage my hair with the mousse to make sure the whole head gets the treatment. The last process would be to blow dry with the hair dryer.

This is when the adage “something happens when you change your routine” creepily comes true. Instead of doing that step by step, I applied mousse on my hair after I brushed my teeth. I proceeded on moisturizing after that. When it was time to blow dry my hair, my old trusted hair dryer wouldn’t turn on. I was screaming in the bathroom to which my husband thought was funny which then irked me even more. It wouldn’t have if I wasn’t going anywhere that day. That’s the reason why I applied mousse on my hair and planned on blow drying in the first place. At home I usually just brush my hair as is after shower.

If I didn’t put mousse beforehand I might not have reacted the way I did but with the volumizing component sitting in my hair, I just knew I would be sporting a slightly slick set of hair. It’s really not a good look for me especially with my choppy bangs. Talk about a bad hair day. I braved that day with a hair full of mousse. As luck would have it, Wal-Mart was my first stop that day. A new Vidal Sassoon hair dryer was my first purchase.

Lesson of the day : Test your hair dryer before applying mousse on your hair.

Hair Rebonding Might Be Postponed For Now…

But the thing is- I don’t want stick straight. I want bouncy, bouncy, beautiful hair. I also want my layers enhanced with some mini-wave. And I know, it can only be achieved via a hair dryer that has a high wattage – something that salons use.

I could always buy one for my own use and I think if it were as easy as it seems, I’d always have beautiful hair as if I just came from a salon. The problem is – I don’t know how to use it effectively as stylists would do in the salon.

A Hair Dryer Frustration

The above picture is Miley Cyrus ( more popularly known as Hannah Montana, as my baby sister worships her haha ) sporting gorgeous loose locks. Oh boy, how I love this girl’s hair.

I’ve always wanted to curl my hair – I think what triggered that fantasy was that when I was about 6 or 7, mom showed me a magazine with a model, her long, lustrous brown hair was permed in its most beautiful shape. She had loose curls, and it couldn’t be sexier than ever. My mom said, “Sophie, I want you to have this kind of hair one day.”. Then, I grew my hair long , even now. With the nature of my hair which was coarse and frizzy, I couldn’t have my hair permed with the fear of making it more frizzy and big! I consulted my local salon for a perm, and they suggested for me to have my hair undergo hair rebonding, then have a digital perm after. That sounded alot. And expensive. I left the salon that day with straight, rebonded hair.

Now that I could not touch my hair and try a curling iron for it would damage the hair rebonding done on me, I’d love to share fabulous Sasha’s experiment on her new hair iron ( Congrats, Sasha! ). I loved her look and told her she looked like cutie Hermione Granger of Harry Potter. She also wrote a review about her new beauty hair styling tool ( and toy ), and featured gorgeous Dexie sporting another style of curl using the hair iron. Wow. B5Media ladies are such beauty vixens! I’m so glad to be part of such a pool of talented beauty and fashion bloggers!
