• Curls require extra maintenance – if you go too long without a trim, those ringlets will not cooperate.

Get The Look: Short and Sleek

Most hairstyles work best with a silk, or other very thin material, square scarf that is between 24″ and 36″ on each side.  Here are my favorite ways to wear a headscarf this summer:

• Low Bun Wrap – adds glamour to a simple hairstyle.  Start with hair pulled back into a low ponytail.  Fold square diagonally into a triangle.  Place center of long edge of triangle at hairline.  Bring edges of triangle around to back tightly and tie under ponytail.  Twist ponytail and tied ends of scarf together and wrap around into a tight bun.  Tuck edges of hair and scarf under bun.
• Headband – simple and adds color to a down or updo.  Fold square diagonally into a triangle.  Roll scarf from long edge of triangle end towards the tip of the triangle so it becomes a long thick rectangular band.  Flip hair upside and place center of band at forehead.  Tie a square knot under hair at the top of the neck.  Flip hair back and flatten around band.  Pull long edges of scarf from back of neck to hang in front.  You can vary the thickness of the band for different looks.
• Hollywood – glamorous paired with sunglasses.  Fold square diagonally into a triangle.  Place center of long edge of triangle just above hairline.  Cross the ends of the scarf under chin.  Bring ends around to back of neck loosely and tie together.
• Head Wrap – best with voluminous beach hair.  Fold square diagonally into a triangle.  Place center of long edge of triangle at middle of forehead.  Bring edges of triangle around to back tightly and tie together on top of point of scarf.

How to Wear a Summer Headscarf

Angel’s model is wearing her hair with two pieces on either side braided and pulled back. A straight part down the center is refreshing and a little bohemian, but notice that it only extends halfway across the top of her head. This leaves room at the back for a little bit of teasing before smoothing things together for just a little bit more chic appeal.

You might recognize that this follows much of the trends in Hollywood right now, with lots of young actresses steering clear of stiff updos and instead opting for more casual, natural styles.

For example, here is Hayden Panettiere at the amfAR Cinema Against AiDS benefit in Cannes a couple weeks ago. Looking like she just stepped off the beach and just happens to always look this fabulous, Hayden is a great example of how versatile and effortless this hairstyle really is.

• If your hair is too wet, you will end up wasting product and time with your blowdryer.
• Try to find the right color bobby pin that blends with your hair – i.e. if you are a blond, don’t get black bobby pins!
• To up the chic-factor, make sure you place the ponytail right above the ear…any higher than that and you’ll look more funky than high fashion.

This week, the winning model sported a dramatic ponytail tucked together at the base of her neck for the most sophisticated (but still laidback) effect.

The process for creating this look yourself is straightforward -

2. Tie hair into a pony right below the crown.

Get The Look: Ponytail Power

And just in case you haven’t thought of it, you might have all the makings of a headband right in your closet. A few weeks ago, (knowing just how popular headbands were becoming), I pulled out a scarf that I bought eons ago and wore it as a headband to the home show. We stopped at Britt’s booth (she’s a landscape designer ) and the first thing she commented on was the scarf in my hair. So, the point I’m trying to make… you don’t have to spend a lot to build a headband wardrobe. You might have some in your closet to start you off for free!

And I was shopping at Wal-Mart on Saturday and guess what… they had a nice selection to choose from. So, yes, I picked up a few more. Amazing what you come out with when you originally went in for milk!
