There are so many lovely choices out there for formal hats, headbands and fascinators.  Just because one celebrity has gone to the extreme, doesn’t mean you need to be intimidated by the thought of trying out something new for a holiday party.

Let’s just avoid that particular hat though…

Regrettable Headwear on the AMA Red Carpet

Each vintage-inspired hat in the Bijou Van Ness collection is handmade by Dudukgian in her Hollywood studio.  The designs are unique, feminine, and bold.  The woman who wears a Bijou Van Ness hat is definitely confident and fashionable with a creative style!

Out of the collection of unique and beautiful pieces in the Bijou Van Leaf collection, this Leaf hat really stood out to me.  I love the way it is styled in this image with the placement on the side of the hide.  It’s a gorgeous piece with silk satin and Swarofski crystals.  I would love to wear this!

Bijou Van Ness Au Revoir Monsieur $275

Vintage-inspired veiled hats are fashionable right now and look amazing dressed up or down.  I love the chenille dot veiling!  This would definitely be the perfect hat to pair with your standard LBD for a formal event.

What an adorable little hat!  This tiny round plate piece that sits on the side of the head is handmade with a great pairing of fabrics: black and white seersucker and red silk satin.  A tiny freshwater pearl sits in the center of the red rosette.  How lovely!

Bijou Van Ness Not-So-Secret Garden $150

For the truly fashion forward woman looking to make a statement, Bijou Van Ness truly shows its originality with the Not-S0-Secret Garden veiled hat.  The birdcage wire veil in bright blue has three large blooms.  This piece is also available in all white, which would be an amazing interpretation of the traditional wedding veil.

A Unique Hat for Your Little Black Dress

She chose to sport a classic “cloche” hat, which was originally based on the shape of a flower pot!  Luckily, the design doesn’t look like something you should turn over and plant flowers inside – it’s actually a very flattering shape and easy for most women to pull off.

Cloche hats are great for cooler weather and you can find them in a rainbow of colors and styles.  If you’d prefer to rock Kelly’s black hat, I’ve found two stylish options:

The “Ring & Peal” cloche hat from Anthropologie is made from black wool felt and features a feminine bow on one side.

This wool felt cloche is from Nordstrom with a buckle detail, and it’s also available in eggplant and charcoal wool felt.

Bonnie’s Knitting is an Etsy seller who creates new hats using vintage wool and embellishments.  This particular hat was made using wool herringbone fabric from the 1920s, accented with a vintage wooden buckle.

Cute Cloche Hats and Kelly Osbourne

Rumor has it though, if we keep our head warm, the rest of us will follow, and for that reason, hats are the must have accessory for the fall and winter months.

But, we all have been there: Hats may keep our heads warm, but they can be very unflattering to our hair. And, as people may see us in our hats – or when we take the hats off, and in that case, we’d like it look, well, good.

We consulted with celebrity hairstylist, Philip Pelusi, and he gave me some great tips on how to make your hair look fab in some of the most popular hats of the season.

Fedora
Contrast the angles of the hat with loose feminine waves.
Why This Works: This type of hat has very sharp “menswear” angles. This is off-set by the softer hairstyle.

How To Achieve This Look: This type of hair style works best on medium to longer length hair. If hair has a natural wave, simply apply a curl enhancing products like P2 by Philip Pelusi ReCurl to boost waves and BeachComber to add texture and let hair dry or dry with a diffuser attachment on your blow dyer. If hair is straight, use a big barrel curling iron to add curls, some facing towards and some facing away from the face.

Beret
Tuck the hair back into a side pony so that soft strands peek out.
Why This Works: A side swept ponytail is a perfect way to wear your hair under a beret. The beret has a French romantic look and this feminine ponytail really compliments that. Tuck the hair back into a side pony so that soft strands peek out.
How To Achieve This Look: This look works best with straight or smooth hair. Create a side part and use a bore bristle paddle brush and a hair smoothing product like Tela Beauty Organics Encore and brush into a low side ponytail at the nape on the opposite side of the part. When secured over your pony, the back of your beret should slouch to the opposite side of the ponytail.

Valeur is a designer from Tokyo who creates soft and beautiful handmade hats with unique designs that incorporate ideas of warmth, personal style, and value.  For Fall Valeur has lots of wrapping hats that have the look of a knit headband or scarf but that offer the warmth of a hat.

This cute wool knit turban is another unique style that I interpret as a combination of a wide headband and a knit hat that creates a fashionable look for Fall.  The best part is that it is reversible and features a heather gray jersey with blue polka dots fabric on the other side, but I couldn’t find an image of it anywhere!

La Garconne is one of the only online retailers where I was able to find Valeur hats, and they only have a small selection.  You can visit Valeur’s website to find locations around the world where their hats are available.

Babushka Hat by Valeur From Tokyo

I love the short-brimmed styles that fit close and low and look like a cross between a cloche and a newsboy.  Shes uses vintage-looking wood buttons and elastic linings that provide a comfortable snug fit.  These hats will be fabulous this Fall with a casual style.

I love the huge bow that wraps around the side of this design that looks great sitting low like a cloche.  The fabric is a stretch wool brocade, which looks great for Fall.

Piper & Paisley Handmade Hats

I have tried every accessories organization technique available because dealing with lots of little pieces can quickly become a nightmare.  I have accumulated a lot of jewelry over the years, ranging from $1 costume jewelry pieces to priceless family jewels and somehow I can never find the exact piece that I’m looking for when I’m rushing out the door.  I have hats and scarves and headbands and pins and lots of little things that I love to add to my outfit to have something a little more expressive.  I have decided that the perfect way to organize my accessories involves:

1. displaying my variety of pieces in a way that allows me to see what I have and possibly be inspired to wear something specific
2. keeping my valuable pieces in a special place so that they can be protected and safe; they don’t need to be as easily accessible since they will probably only be worn for special occasions

I use a variety of containers, hooks, and jewelry stands for organizing my accessories.  Here are some key pieces:

• earring stand – A life-changing discovery!  After keeping my earrings in a tiny box for years and always wasting time searching for a pair that matched, I finally discovered the fabulous earring stand.  There are many different artistic varieties that allow you to hang your earrings in a way that displays all of your options and always keeps the pairs together.

• small drawers – Find something with lots of little compartments for holding your more precious pieces that usually come in their own protective bags.  You can put just one or two pieces in each drawer.  These pieces are worn less so you don’t need them out on display where they can be seen everyday or possibly lost.  If you can’t find a jewelry box like this, look for a product designed for office supply storage.  I just received the one below as a gift from my mom and I LOVE it!  So perfect for an architect!

• necklace hooks – Long chunky necklaces are in style right now, so it’s definitely difficult to find a jewelry box that will hold these larger pieces.  I like to put hooks on my wall to hang these necklaces so I can see them displayed and keep them from getting tangled.  You can just use tiny hooks that attach to your wall from the hardware store, or find a jewelry stand with necklace hooks.

• tiny bowl – I need a place where I can immediately drop my earrings and rings when I get home from work or going out.  When I’m exhausted I don’t want to deal with finding exactly where everything goes, so I drop everything into a pretty little bowl so I can find everything in the morning.

• hats & scarves hooks – An over-the-door hook is perfect for stashing all of your long scarves and hats.  Hanging your hats will prevent them from getting crushed and will let them dry if you’ve worn them in the rain or snow.

• purse hanger – I store most of my purses in felt bags in boxes in my closet, but I like to have a few options readily available to me so I can switch throughout the week for different outfits and events.  I choose a few different sizes and levels of dressiness to display on a purse hanger in my closet so I can switch out quickly without having to dig through boxes when I’m on my way out the door.

I love this color!  This is a perfect little soft slouchy beret with a handmade feel and big holes in the knit to keep you cool.  This design also comes in grey, mustard, black, or ivory.

This beret has a unique foral pattern constructed with an extremely open knit.  You could definitely wear this when the weather is still warm.  This design is also available in black, cream, or navy.

This soft ivory beret has a beautiful knit pattern and a ribbed border for a comfortable fit.  I like to knit these types of things, but at this price it’s really crazy not to buy one in all three colors!
