Hot Belt Trends for Fall 2009

Belts are more than just a way to keep your pants up! They provide another accent to your outfit, shape your silhouette and can be a great way to make a statement.

There are a few simple guidelines to follow for fall and winter this year. First of all, the wider the belt, the more restrained the color should be. Wider belts are great for cinching in a outfit, or layering over a cardigan – but keep the colors muted.

If you want to add a pop of color to your outfit with a belt, go for a skinny belt. Wearing multiple skinny belts at a time is also trendy, but can be hard for most women to pull off. Try wearing a skinny belt that wraps a couple of times around your waist instead.

Metallic chain belts can also be a fun way to add a bold accent to your look, but I’d personally recommend keeping them for dressier occasions.

I’m a little late with jumping on the decorative belt bandwagon. For years I avoided wearing a decorative belt on top of my shirts – thinking that it would make my waist look larger… I finally tried some different styles out and love them – they actually accentuate my curves, instead of making me look bulky (as I had feared). Now that I’ve realized what belts can do – I’ve got some decisions to make!

Do I go with a classic leather belt, like the faux-croc belt in cognac leather from Calvin Klein:

Or do I go bold & decorative, with this jeweled turquoise belt from Kenneth Jay Lane?

But I love the punched leather edging on this belt from Linea Pelle – it reminds me of eyelet lace:

And the color of this robin’s egg belt from Lambertson Truex is lovely…

Too many choices… and too small a budget

cork belts?

I think this cork belt from Maison Martin Margiela looks really cool:

I have one little concern – how well is that layer of cork going to hold up as a belt? Yes, it’s laminated onto leather – but I’d hate to spend $245 and have the belt fall apart on me!

So does anyone have experiences with cork accessories?
