Tomorrow, February 6th is National Wear Red Day – how come?
“The Heart Truth campaign is the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s (NHLBI) initiative to raise awareness of heart disease and give women a “wakeup” call about their risk of heart disease – the #1 killer of women. While this is an ongoing campaign, NHLBI puts a big focus on heart disease awareness during February, American Heart Month.”
In honor of Wear Red – we’re having fun with red jewelry today! Red makes a statement, adds a bold pop of color to your wardrobe and shows your confidence as a woman.

Bold to delicate – Mother of Pearl jewelry

I realized as I was writing the last post about Van Cleef & Arpel’s mother of pearl “Alhambra” jewelry, I haven’t really done a lot of writing about mother of pearl.
Technically mother of pearl is actually “nacre“, but let’s face it – mother of pearl sounds so much nicer Nacre is the shell lining most commonly found in pearl oysters and pearl freshwater mussels.
Mother of pearl is a versatile material, it can be cut into large pendants like this “Donut” pendant:

It can be carved into delicate shapes, like this carved rose pendant:

carved turquoise from Stephen Dweck

I’m a sucker for turquoise – especially when it’s handled as beautifully as Stephen Dweck’s collection of carved turquoise and sterling silver jewelry.
Check out the details on this lovely ID bracelet:
And the equally gorgeous “Carved Oval Ring“:
Both pieces are hand-made in the USA – it’s always good to support local jewelry craftspeople!
BTW – Did you know that turquoise was one of the first semi-precious stones to be mined? It’s been used in jewelry for more than 5000 years!

December 29, 2008 by Chloe Findlay-Harder

Pantone has released their color of 2009 and it’s a lush, bold yellow – “Mimosa“!
“The color yellow exemplifies the warmth and nurturing quality of the sun, properties we as humans are naturally drawn to for reassurance,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. “Mimosa also speaks to enlightenment, as it is a hue that sparks imagination and innovation.”
Yellow can be a tricky color to wear – but it doesn’t need to be! Wear yellow jewelry in moderation to add a flash of color and brighten your entire outfit. Just one piece is enough to add spark – …read more

weekend finds at Etsy

One of the things I love about Etsy is the incredibly diversity of designers, mediums and techniques – you can find almost anything there!
Today’s pick is the dramatic (and waaaaay underpriced, in my opinion) felted wool “Calla Lily” necklace by Beads & Fairies:
It’s been created around a strand of wire, so you can shape it however you’d like. I think this piece could be worn so many different ways – even as part of a bridal outfit for a trendy bride!
