I’ve got a golden ticket for you, folks, and it comes in the form of a totally badass slashed silk dress by Rory Beca. I am loving basically every aspect of this dress. The silhouette pinches in at the waist and comes to a hip-forgiving tulip-shaped skirt. Check it:

So, it’s sexy, but will obscure any problem areas with ease. The slashed top is sexy and edgy without looking cheap or slutty, a major feat in my book. I would rock it with skinny-toed stilettos and sheer black hose. Available for $321 from Revolve Clothing.

Just because it’s fall doesn’t mean you have to walk around all covered up at your next black tie event. Choose your fabrics carefully, and you can still show some skin.

This sleek and simple dress by Halston is the perfect way to stay sexy and warm. I love the shoulder-baring design, but the lightweight wool fabric makes it practical for a cool evening. If it’s really cold, skip the bare-legged lok and go with opaque black tights. Available for $478 from Gilt.

Are you noticing a Halloween theme around here, lately? Wanna know why? Because it’s like two weeks until the big day, and a lot of people are making it their BIG DAY, so…anyways, check out this goth-tastic short wedding dress by Petticoat Pistol.

3 Ways to Wear Only One Shoulder

One-shouldered gowns are the look of the moment. Well, one of them, anyways. But, how do you wear this one shouldered look without coming off like a disco princess wannabe? Here’s three ways, courtesy of Badgley Mischka.

This silk chiffon one-shouldered gown really makes a statement, and it isn’t “take me to the roller rink”. This drapey, dead sexy take on the one-shouldered look makes it black tie or red carpet ready. One way to keep a one-shouldered look current is by making sure it’s composed of a nice, sophisticated fabric, and not a shiny poly blend. Available for $459 (from $995).

This short, red one-shouldered dress has a caftan/kimono look. It’s not at the same level of chic as the gown above, but it would definitely start some fires on a night on the town. This look is going to take a good shoe choice to keep it from the nightgown arena, so I’d go with a closed toe to avoid the come-hither look of a mule. Flats would work, too. This sweet, short, one-shouldered dress walks the line between the other two. It’s dressy enough for an event, but too casual for black tie. As one the other dresses, the soft, gathered look of the fabric keeps the asymmetry from looking too severe. I love this dress with sparkly stilettos and a patent clutch. In case you haven’t noticed, it’s still summer. If you are planning a summer wedding and still haven’t found the perfect dress, you better get on it. And, given the economy and the temperature, you might want to consider something short and simple. But, just because it’s short, simple, and inexpensive doesn’t mean it has to look totally plain Jane. Check out this adorable dress by BCBG Max Azria.

Besides the general loveliness of this dress, it has a number of perks. First, that black ribbon around the waist means that you can wear black shoes with it, which is a major plus if you want to buy shoes that you’ll wear again. Also, the cut is very flattering, especially for shorter brides. The short length of the skirt will elongate your frame and show off your legs. Plus, I love the floral appliqué at the bust, it adds just the right amount of sweet. Last, but not least, this dress is a mere $288, a wonder in the wedding kingdom! Sure, it’s not technically a “wedding” dress, but a) who cares and b) once you slap the word wedding on a dress the price goes up at least 100%. Available at Nordstrom.

Sarah Seven might be one of my new favorite up and coming bridalwear desgingers. I love her offbeat point of view, ethereal designs, and memorably titled dresses. I’m reserving complete and total adoration until I see the craftswomanship in the real world, but for the moment, she is at the top of a short list.

There’s nothing about this dress that I don’t love. (Except the fact that it would look terrible on me, I’m way too hip-y to pull off this much volume in that area!) The softly gathered ruffles around the bust are so sweet, and the delicate pleating in the bodice perfectly balances the girliness with structure. I love the tulip-shaped skirt, and the sheerness of the fabric. I can see this dress working for an earthy wedding look with the moss pillow and wreaths recently featured, or glammed up rock-n-roll style with some dramatic feather hair fascinator and white leather booties. Either way, or any other way for that matter, this dress is a dream. Available for $515 from Sarah Seven.

I’m totally crazy for short wedding gowns. I know they aren’t traditional, but the truth is that short styles are generally more flattery on us everyday sized girls. So, what do you do when you have a destination wedding and not all of the important people in your life are able to come? Why you have another wedding, of course! Or at least a party that looks something like a wedding. Which is what I’m doing. Once in May and once in June. Don’t ask.

Anyways, the point is: if you are having a party like a wedding where you are the bride, what do you wear? Your original wedding gown? Sure, but why pass up an opportunity to buy a new dress? Perhaps something slightly less bridesy, like this mini dress by Kirribilla.

It looks like the perfect party dress, only in white, which is only perfect for parties if you are either trying to look like the bride or you never drink red wine. In any case, I am crazy in love with the puff sleeves and the slim silhouette. It has these ingenious asymmetrical pleats that add volume to the skirt, seemingly without adding a lot of volume to your hips. I’d pair mine with a feather hairclip and some sky high stilettoes. Okay, I will be the first to admit that I don’t actually love Michael Kors. While classically beautiful, it seems like a lot of his things follow the trends, rather than creating them. But every now and then he really surprises me with something elegant and insightful. Like this:

I can’t get over the gorgeous silhouette of this dress. The bateau neckline is modest, but beautiful, and in combination with the tulip skirt, this would be a flattering dress on so many women. Plus, the wool fabric really does give the appearance of thickly folded origami. Available for $1,795 at Michael Kors.
