Upcycled Summer Shirt by Heidi and Seek

Last month, I wrote about upcycling, what it means, and why it’s important. To summarize, briefly, upcycling means using what could easily become trash by making it into something useful. The piece below is made out of a second hand shirt and factory remnant fabric, but the design and style are original and new.
I love the way the floral pattern on the accents pops against the bright blue, and the army green ruffles are an adorable touch. This is a sweet summer top to wear, and one that is kind to the environment. Available for $45 from Heidi and Seek.

What the %$#! is Upcycling, Anyways?

Upcycling is one of those indie cultisms that gets batted about the blogosphere with very little explanation. If you don’t know what it means then your eyes probably glaze over when you read it and your mind replaces it with the word recycling, right? Well, don’t feel stupid, because that’s pretty much what it means.

Fish Handbag Made From Recycled Tires

Okay, I’ll be honest here. While I am always a supporter of using recycled materials in fashion, I am a little tired of recycled car parts. Maybe I’ve just seen too many Saturn sponsored Project Runway challenges, or seatbelt bags, or license plate purses, but I just feel generally underwhelmed by car parts accessories.
