Purple Pleated Neckline Dress by Lirola

Last year when I went to NYC for two weeks, in order to pare down how heavy my bags can get I limited myself to only bringing items that were purple or black. Yes, I have a point. My point is that purple is basically a neutral color. You can wear it wear anything, and it looks good on almost everyone. Even green people. Or rather, especially green people. Anyways, I love this purple retro chic dress by Lirola.

I know the model only has half a face, but try not to hold it against her. Focus on the dress. I love the shape. It’s so Mad Men it makes me want to get out my bullet bra and eat bon bons all day. The neckline really draws attention to your, er, assets, and the skirt has a nice, forgiving a-line shape. And, it has pockets! Perfect. And, it’s available in other colors, in case you’re some weird-o who doesn’t love purple as much as I do. Available for $117 from Lorila.

There’s still a few weeks of warm weather left, and I know some people are still figuring out the details of their before fall weddings. Well, there’s not much time left, but that doesn’t mean you have to leave your bridesmaids in the lurch, fashion-wise. This gorgeous linen dress by Miss Maisy Brown is perfect as a bridesmaids dress.

I love the 50’s fit and flare silhouette of this dress. The bandeau top with its little ruffles is a romantic touch on a dress with clean, simple lines. The lace fruit motif belt is fabulous on the dress, and you could also wear it with other outfits. The swing skirt will be great on its own, or poufed up with a little crinoline if you like. The 1900’s are an overlooked period in fashion history, I think. Romantica fabrics and feminine silhouettes are never totally out of style, and this vintage reproduction wedding gown would fit right in at a modern wedding. The soft, flowing layers of fabric are sweet without looking too girly. I love the unfussy, comfortable look of the gown. I also think that the lightness of the fabric and lack of structure makes it perfect for an outdoor summer wedding. Available for $175 from A Vintage Wedding.

What’s New, Pussycat? 52 Skadoo

I love vintage reproduction clothing. Because I love vintage styles, but am not vintage sized. No, but seriously, go ahead and try and find that adorable wiggle dress in a modern size 8. Not happening. Not in my price range, anyways.

Fifty-two Skadoo is one of my new favorite online shops, featuring the finest in vintage reproductions. They carry my tippy top fave line, Stop Staring!, and comission their own original work.

They have Stop Staring! staples like this 40’s chic daysuit. Something I really like about Stop Staring! is their fabric. They use a lot of stretch bengaline, which really hugs your curves and makes ready-to-wear items look a little more custom.

This cherry print sundress is so sweet it’s bound to give you a toothache. I love the halter top with the perfect little centered bow.

It isn’t exactly the season for this tweed number, but it’s good to know what I have to look forward to come fall. All dresses available from Fifty-Two Skadoo.

Designer Spotlight: Stop Staring!

Alicia Estrada, head designer and founder of the Stop Staring! clothing line, began sewing as a teenager. With the help of her supportive family, Estrada has turned her hobby into an extremely successful business. She takes her design inspiration from classic couture, favorite films, and the inherent beauty of the female form.

Stop Staring! is a line dedicated to creating one-of-a-kind vintage designer reproductions. The line mainly focuses on dresses, many of which are made to flatter less than perfect figures (and whose isn’t?), and are available in a large range of sizes.

I discovered the line last year, when looking high and low for vintage dresses in modern sizes. Stop Staring! has since become the first place I look for vintage styles. Why? Because I am a size 8 with a thick waist and muscular arms, which are not easily accommodated by actual vintage clothes. I have come to love the line for their high quality craftsmanship and attention to detail, and I wore Stop Staring! to both my rehearsal dinner and one of my bachelorette parties.

One of my favorite dresses by them is this Dolce Vita dress inspired by Anita Ekverg’s character from La Dolce Vita, which I sadly do not (yet!) own. The film is one of my favorites, and Ekverg plays an extremely coquettish young actress with a penchant for playing in the fountain. The dress is absolutely as seductive as the character, and would suit a curvy girl well. Available from Stop Staring!
