8 Reasons I’m In Love With Royal Blue

I’m absolutely head over heels for shirt, skirts, dresses and accessories in royal blue. I’m not sure exactly when this surpassed pink as my color of choice, but when I look at this beautiful dress I get goosebumps and feel all happy. I need more occasions to wear gorgeous deep blue cocktail dresses. As well as just more occasions for cocktails.

I absolutely adore the clean neckline, interesting belt configuration and the way the folds flatter and compliment this teeny model’s waif-ly figure.

But since most of my days tend to err more on the casual (read: lazy) side…I settle for royal blue wherever I can fit it in. This weekend I found myself walking up to the counter at Banana Republic carrying eight items.

Five of which…were royal blue.

Naturally, I mostly picked up the essentials…a couple pairs of jeans and cotton tops. But it was hard to resist indulging in excessively pretty items like this impossibly hard to love (but maybe not so easy to pull off) accordion pleated skirt.

What is it about this color.

I’ve thought long and hard about why it is that royal blue items keep making their way into my closet, and come up with eight answers that ultimately confirm royal blue is a justified staple I should (and will) continue to invest in.

It’s classic. As a primary color, royal blue is historically relevant and an essential for all the other shades and hues we adore. There are few times in history where the color has fallen out of style; hipsters, prepsters and fashionistas alike can all appreciate this rich color.
It’s trendy. That’s not to say royal blue is without merit or is dull, though. As the photo above clearly demonstrates, there is still something powerful and striking about a palette of deep blue walking down the runway.

Popular. I see this color all the time. It shows up in so many manifestations of outfits, accessories that it’s easy for me to find royal blue indulgences for myself as well as appreciate how others incorporate it into their own ensembles.
Not too Popular. That being said, the color is not showing up everywhere. Basic enough that it’s enjoyed by many, but not so basic that it competes with ‘black’ for being most ubiquitous color, royal blue is still a hue that is quietly rampant…and that’s a nice place to be.
It goes with most everything. Simple pair of jeans? No problem. Yellow skirt? Yes, it works. Red shoes? Okay, now you’re looking a little patriotic…but with the right combination of garments and accessories, that might be quite alright.
Skin tone friendly. Have you ever tired on a shirt that made you look ghastly pale, yellow, or too red? There are certain shades that just don’t work for everyone. Some yellows, oranges and even greens are just simply off limits for me. But royal blue is one color that I have yet to see on someone where it just fundamentally didn’t work.
Seasonal flexibility. Maybe a little more winter than anything else, I still have a great number of summer wear items that are deep and boldly blue. Whereas some colors (forest green = winter, pale yellow = oh, so summer) just don’t want to work with the seasons, royal blue is happy to accommodate.
It’s not pink. As I already mentioned, I happen to be a typical girl who usually considers bright magenta tones to be my number one pick. But how utterly predictable is that? When it comes to picking a favorite, I enjoy the fact that royal blue has so many fine fashion qualities…and is also not the answer that most would anticipate.
