8 Tips For A Better Blow Dry

8 Tips For A Better Blow Dry

I just spent forty minutes in front the mirror methodically blowdrying my hair. For those of you rolling your eyes at that amount of time spent on vanity, well…it’s worth it. I try not to blow dry my hair every day (gets dry and breaks easily) but when I do, I want it to really look good. Here are some words of wisdom and tricks of the trade I’ve developed along the way:

Make sure you point the blowdryer down when applying heat to a section. Letting it blow upward will only encourage the frizzies.
Use a product designed to protect your …read more

6 Reasons To Check Out a Blow Dry Bar

Last night, I was in heaven. Okay, that might be a little bit of an exaggeration, but for a girl who usually has about ten minutes worth of patience for her hair on a daily basis…the kind of pampering I received at the new Blo Blow Dry Bar in Toronto (officially opening next week) was a serious treat.
I know you girls with the pin straight hair are raising your eyebrows and wondering why the heck someone would pay to have their hair blow dried if there wasn’t a haircut happening along with it. Well, not all of us are blessed …read more

5 Products for Short Hair

5 Products for Short Hair

Well, I did it!  After dithering about for some time about needing a new look, I took the plunge and cut off my hair.  Although I don’t have a photo yet, and it’s going to take some time learning how to manage and style it, a pretty good approximation is Sharon Stone short.
After a year or so of darker highlights, I also decided to lighten up in more ways than one, and went a sassier blonde for summertime.
While I think that I love the look, I have to admit that it’s taking a little getting used to.  Fortunately, I’m …read more

Hair Appliances: What are the Basics?

How many hair appliances do you have?
I was doing some spring housecleaning — okay, more like summer housecleaning, and it wasn’t really me, it was the new housekeeper that I hired – but under the sink was a basket full of hair appliances.
I don’t use very many of these any more, but I still have quite the collection:

Blow Dryer – When my hair was short I used this every day.  Now that I’m considering chopping off my hair once again, I think I’d better keep it.
Travel Blow Dryer – Because the one above is too big to pack, and …read more

To Cut or Not to Cut, That is the Question

My hair is about shoulder length, very thick, and full of natural curls and waves.  It’s the kind of mop that hair stylists run their hands through and ooh and ahh over how great it is.  It’s also the kind of hair that will be dry and brittle if I don’t take care of it.  That means not washing it every day and laying off the electric hair appliances.
I’ve worked very hard to keep my hair healthy and in good shape, and it’s paid off.  I can let it air dry and be full of curls, brush it out for …read more

7 Steps To Perfect Curls With Fekkai

I have battled with my hair for many years. Over time, I’ve come to grips with days where a sloppy pony tail will have to suffice…and now take an extra few moments to relish the times when I do achieve shiny smooth straight hair. After spending that much time with a hair straightener, I figure I deserve it.
Over the same period of time, I have also tested a lot of products. Somehow I always seem to come back to Frederic Fekkai. At one point or another, there always seems to be at least one product in my routine from his …read more

6 Reasons To Cut Your Hair

That’s right – I’ve had it. No more internal dialogue up in my head wondering whether or not I should cut off my now very long locks. The waffling about bangs? Old news. That was merely a pitstop on the way to a really big change.
So tonight, before I commit myself to heading to the hairdresser tomorrow, I submit my seven biggest reasons for why it’s oh so good to change it up every once in a while.
1. The same look is boring. There’s nothing more awkward than running into someone you haven’t seen in ten years and discovering they …read more

5 Reasons Why I Shouldn’t Get Bangs Again (and 2 Reasons Why I Still Want Them)

Look at how pretty Lily Allen is with her long locks and chunky bangs. I may not be running out to purchase those earrings (hoops have never been my thing), but I look at photos like this and all I can think is -
Should I get bangs again?
I love bangs. They aren’t for everyone, and I know plenty of people who just should have never have gone there – but I love the look and once again find myself contemplating biting the bullet, and making the chop.
But there are a number of reasons why this is totally and completely a …read more

7 Products to Tame Thick Curly Hair

I have shoulder length hair.  It’s color treated (hey – I have way too much gray coming in way too early!), very thick, naturally curly, and tending to the dry side.  I often use a flat iron on it, abusing it a few times a month.
All that adds up to a constant battle to manage my hair, keeping it looking good and healthy.
After many years of trial and errors, here are the products that have evolved into my current favorites.

Shampoo & Conditioner:  Redken All Soft Hair Products.  This is a relatively new addition to my hair line up, coming …read more
